If you have to take I-65 through Chilton County, God help you. Troopers are always posted day and night, whether you see them or not. They frequently hide in places you'll never see until you get the blue light special. Beware, there is a "construction zone" in the area that hasn't been worked on for months... I imagine it's just a good source of speeding income. When the trooper pulled me over, he gave me a ticket for "speeding in a 55"... the actual interstate speed limit was 70. My advice, not only should you stick to the letter of the limit, you should probably go a few miles under for safety's sake. It's only a few miles across and you'll be on your merry way to other counties that aren't more interested in dolling out tickets than they are dolling out justice. Good luck, and I pray you aren't slammed like I was!
Comment (3/2004): I travel to this area of the world only at Thanksgiving and during the summer the summer to visit family. How right you are about the accidents south of Clanton and north of Clanton! I have seen an auto accident on every trip...some worst than others. Maybe that is why Troopers are working so hard in this area.
Comment (2/2004): Actually the Troopers are just about always in the Jemison area, WHY? Well there is at least one serious wreck on I-65 a week and a fatality is not an unusual occurrence. As for getting a ticket for going 55, that is probably not true, I go through there at least twice a day in different vehicles and I alway go at least 75. And as for construction, humm, new pavement, new guard rails (since the others are constantly getting torn down by cars running off the road or being run off the road by Semi's going 80-100 mph), larger exit ramps..it is pretty clear that there is work being done here and at this time they are working at night. You probably deserved it. Admit you where speeding...no one drives under 70 in that area.
Comment (5/2004): We just drove 65 through Alabama and the "construction zones". I told my husband it was nothing more than a speed trap, as it was obvious no construction was ocurring. There were MANY signs pointing out that fines were doubled in construction zones. We were lucky we saw no police. On the way home we went out of our way to avoid Alambama.
Comment (6/2004): Okay, I have to say something about the last comment. Most of the time in Alabama, construction and/or repair work on the highways takes place at night, when the traffic counts are lower. Just because you see no one working the site at the moment does not mean they aren't working on that stretch of roadway. In the recent past we've had a number of workers killed by inebriated or careless drivers....yup, late at night. As a result, the state legislature passed a law requiring the speeding fines to be doubled in these areas. It is not a speed trap. It is a law state-wide. Alabama is trying to protect those highway workers as well as motorists.
Comment (4/2005): I couldn't have written the statement above better. The only thing I'd like to add is that in Chilton County, the local sheriff's dept. patrols the interstate also. So.....if the State Troopers don't get ya for something the local County law enforcement will harass you for something else! BE CAREFUL! If possible - avoid Chilton County, their motels, restaurants, and gas stations. That's the only way to send a message to these people.
Comment (4/2005): I just received a ticket in this area on 4/15/05. The speed limit does most certainly decrease to 55MPH so the original post was telling the truth. There were 7 State Troopers in a 6 mile stretch. Each one had a car pulled over. The trooper that got me was sitting right in front of a huge flashing sign that read "SPEED LIMIT 55". That was the first sign I saw that let me know the speed limit was reduced. The construction zone was another 5 miles in front of me so I have no idea why the speed limit is reduced. The speed is either reduced because Chilton County needs money or the locals can't drive very well.
Comment (1/2006): if you don't speed or show drastic signs of ignorance, you don't get pulled over or get a ticket. lived here 25 years and no tickets, and great restraunts, referring to earlier comment.
Comment (08/2007): Thank the Lord for the St Troopers and other law enforcement for their low tollerance toward drivers on I-65 especially in Chilton County. Just look at the accidents on this streach of Interstate over the last month and the ammount of lifes that were taken. If it\'s a speed trap then more power to them. It is sorely needed. I have to make frequent trips to B\'ham from exit 219 to go to my drs. appointments. I set my cruise at 69 and the only time I get to pass another automobile is if they are making an exit. The way the largest amount of people drive I don\'t wonder at there are not more deaths. I am almost run over a number of times and the cussing and 1 finger waving that I recieve are to numerous to count. No, I\'m not some ole need to be retired driver, I just think about what I would do the rest of my life if I cause an accident because some of the stupid things that takes place. It would be bad enough to hurt someone doing all you could do to drive safely and still be involved, but the carelessness of these drives makes me wonder how they are able to ever get behind a steering wheel again. THANK YOU TROOPERS, Let\'s have a BLITZ MORE OFTER, AND DON\'T ADVERTISE IT NEXT TIME......
