Newly opened Pecos Road is a four lane divided highway along the bottom edge of Phoenix, It is still under construction in some parts and at 20th Street it is coned off (westbound )to move traffic from one cariageway to the other, at this point there is a half mile section restricted to 25mph which seems like a crawl. The police wait in the 20th St intersection on bikes picking one motorist after another, it is easy pickings and they are there nearly every day.
Comment (7/2002): This is a note for Arizona in general. The last two weeks of July and all of August is ALWAYS a period of stepped up "enforcement" of speed limits on freeways and rural highways. Travelers should be aware that during this time period, DPS and local authorities will take advantage of the vacation travel season. While RADAR and LIDAR detectors may help drivers on populated roads, DPS also uses VASCAR. Be sure to keep an eye out for seemingly sudden brake lights on the highway. Based on the number of vehicles I see pulled over on a daily basis right now, I am confident that if every individual who was cited was to fight the ticket in court, the police force would not have the time to be able to perform their other duties. My other recommendation is for out of state drivers to avoid the state of Arizona all together until September.
Comment (2/2003): Not so sure about the out-of-state claim. I proudly have not only California plates on my car, but two California State Flag stickers in my window and have never had a cop here look twice (been here for 2 years).
Comment (9/2003): Arizona in general. If you have out of state tags, and get pulled over on a sppeding charge, brother you are stuck. YOU CAN FIGURE ON FORKING OVER THE 130 BUCKS. The only other option, besides mailing them the money,is to return to the state, at their convenience, to fight the ticket. In most cases it's cheaper to pay than return.
