Town of Carefree has contract with Maricopa County Sheriff's Office for police. Carefree is mainly a retirement community with lots of older residents. Vigorous enforcement of low speed limits occurs along Cave Creek Road and along Tom Darlington Road, which are routes through Carefree used by travelers going north to lakes. MCSO cars are white, sometimes unmarked.
Comment (11/2004): If stopped for speeding in Carefree be carefull of Maricopa Country Deputies approaching your car. They usually will approach you vehicle with one hand on their gun.
Comment (12/2004): This description is absolutely correct. Cave Creek Rd. is clearly designed for speeds greater than 25 mph! And 25 mph is the enforced limit.
Comment (2/2004): I absolutly agree. The speed limits throughout Carefree are around 25 to 30 MPH all the time. The officers in that area have been known to issue tickets for everything too. People get ticked all the time for things such as; going 3-5 MPH over the speed limit, changing lanes with out signaling and having cars that are 'too loud'. Do remember that Carefree has a Noise Ordinance, and they do intend to inforce it.
Comment (2/2004): Enforcement is strong everyday including weekends and in addition to patrol cars motorcycles are used with instant on hiding in the bushes.
Comment (5/2004): True - The Town of Carefree has a $375,000 annual contract to pay Sheriff Arpaio's deputies to write speeding tickets to in essence pay the amount of the contract (only 8 tickets per day). Areas that should be posted at 45 mph are posted at 25 mph to make tourists an easy mark.
Comment (11/2004): The Sonoran News, local newspaper for Carefree, AZ, has reported several incidents of Maricopa County Sheriff's deputies roughing up and arresting drivers for minor traffic violations. One incident involved a 70 year local architect - another involved a young mother on her way home. The mother's crime was speaking to her children at home on cell phone. She did not obey the deputies demand to hang up - she was dragged from car, arrested, booked and jailed. After a few unnecessary hours in jail - she was released by a judge.
Comment (11/2004): North of Carefree Hwy. on Cave Creek Rd. - Maricopa County Sheriff's deputies hide behind vegetation in the median aiming radar at both north and southbound traffic. Speed limit is posted at 45 mph although the road is a 4-lane divided highway that could easily handle traffic at 55 or 60 mph. Lots of tickets written on this 3 mile stretch of Carefree on the way to Cave Creek.
Comment (12/2004): Tom Darlington rd and cave creek rd should be 45MPH not 25. The ever growing business community rely on people outside the area for business,if the Police keep handing out tickets the customers will stop coming.
Comment (12/2004): Agree this is a unfare speed trap!know that I have been tagged how can I get out?

North of Carefree Hwy on Cave Creek Rd for about 2 mile going into the town of Cave Creek - 4 lane divided highway. Maricopa County Deputies hide behind trees in center media. Carefree Councilman supervising law enforcement has approved deputies approaching all vehicles with hands on weapons. There have been two recent incidents that deputies roughed-up and arrested a 70 year old grandfather and in a spearate incident a 35 year old mother of three. This is a training ground for MCSO deputies so be careful in Carefree, AZ.
