Most of the highway in this area is divided by about a 40-50 foot median with lots of brush. Occasionally though there is a break in the brush, and in these breaks several CHP will be sitting and watching. When I got my ticket here, there were at least 6 CHP cars enforcing both directions. Traffic was very light, so everyone was going VERY fast, and everyone was getting pulled over because there were so many CHP there and not a lot of traffic.

Comment (12/2002): Although the CHP does use radra Ka, the most likely way you were ticketed was the Airplane. I travel >100,000 miles a year inside California's borders and know the CHP's games better than their own officers do. Any time ther are six of them in a group look up, ther is an airplane close by. Very important: THE AIRPLANE MUST PACE YOU. Vascar is illegal in California and cannot be used. A good scanner (Uniden BCT 7) is very effective in picking off an airplane. Look for transmissions on obscure CHP frequencies and you will find your pilot speaking to his ground units.

Comment (7/2002): Not only speed traps but pay close attention to the signs that say "Seat Belt Law strictly enforced". I traveled this area in October of 2001 ande was going over the speed limit and was followed for 2 miles before being pulled over. I was ticketed for not wearing my seat belt

Barstow PD can be frequently spotted hiding in on the median in the shade under the overpasses. In the California deserts overpasses are always traditional speedtrap locations both for local police and CHP. Barstow PD stopped me around midnight for burnt out license plate lights. Fortunately I was not speeding, and he let me go when it was clear I was not drunk or doing anything else illegal. Just keep in mind, burnt out lights etc. are the sort of nuisance infractions they look for when they need an excuse to go on a fishing expedition for bigger crimes. So keep your car in good shape!

When coming from Las Vegas, NV and traveling westbound on the Interstate 15, be cautious in construction zones. Speed limit is 55 MPH. My radar detector picked up a K band alert from a CHP vehicle that was parked on the side of the freeway about one mile away in a construction zone.
