A Weld County Deputy Sheriff in a marked County car sits at roadside with flashing lights on, then gives tickets to unsuspecting drivers who are unaware that a seldom-used, obscure Colorado State law mandates that when passing a police vehicle parked at roadside with lights on, motorists are to slow down 20 MPH and pull into the passing lane!
Comment (8/2006): Not sure about Weld County, however, Colorado State Patrol has been know write this type of ticket while on the Interstate. Usually another officer observes the violation and writes the ticket. No one is going to slow to 20MPH on the Interstate unless there is an accident or something else going on.
Comment (8/2006): Weld County is a seperate County....Not Adams County.
Comment (9/2006): Please note again that this is going on in Weld County, not Adams. To their credit, I rarely see Adams County Sheriff's officers running speed traps. Also, the state law is to slow down by 20 mph when passing a police vehicle parked on the shoulder, not to 20 mph. This would require slowing from 75 to 55 mph on I-25 north of the Denver area, or from 65 to 45 on Highway 119. Still, this isn't very practical (or safe) if a police car is just parked on the shoulder and there is heavy traffic on the highway. Most drivers in the right lane would slow by 5-10 mph maybe.
