The town is less than a half mile long. The speed limit drops dramatically to 30 mph. The highway is partolled by marked and unmarked cars. Locals know of the trap and they slow down. The trap is designed for tourists visiting the Beaches in Delawaare and Maryland

Comment (10/2005): Go Visit somewhere else...this is a speedtrap and the cops are probably on the take... I have sent a request to the Delaware State Attorney. Should legal avenue be insufficient, appropriate moral retribution will be undertaken.

Comment (4/2005): As long as your not more then 15 over, they won't pull you over, and if they do, there much more inclined to give warnings, the town doesnt want to be known as a speed trap town.

Comment (10/2005): The speed limit does not really drop "dramatically," since the speed on Rt. 1 outside of Dewey coming from the North is already 35 (heavily disobeyed), coming from the South, it is a more dramatic drop. However, this is not heavily enforced, as traffic is usually crawing during the summer anyway. You're more likely to get a jaywalking ticket.

Comment (10/2005): Although the town has plenty of unethical ways of generating revenue using its police force, they're not out on the highway that often and they don't make that much money from speeding. You are more likely to get a ticket for not using the crosswalk or crossing against the light. The speed limit drops to 30 because of the high amount of pedestrian traffic on the sidewalks and crosswalks. Pedestrians are struck and KILLED there every summer. Just read the papers.

Comment (2/2006): I totally agree. The cops also know what they are doing and will usually downgrade the speed to the next lowest fine. It still stinks that they use this place as a speedtrap. I usually spend a fairly high amount of money when I vacation...but I spent next to nothing in their town after getting the ticket. I will never go back.

Comment (3/2006): The most telling thing about this speed trap is that ALL the locals slow to 34 as they drive through Dewey. We all have had enough friends ticketed at 36 to know not to try our luck.

Comment (4/2006): Dewey is a speed trap. I have a place in OC which I visit throughout the year, so I've had my fair share of experiences. I will note, however, the trap seems to be only going towards Ocean city, towards the end of Dewey city limits. Still, I wouldnt suggest going more than 5 mph over the limit regardless of your direction.
