Basically all of DE-1 is a giant speed trap for tourists. Now as a person whos vacationed at the DE shore for 20 years, I know that you've gotta follow the speed limit along this whole route. Cops in Fenwick Island and Bethany Beach, the 2 tourist beachs in the south, have varying ways of enforcement. Most of the time, they will park and unmanned Crown Vic along the highway to slow people down. However, just when you least expect it, the Crown Vic will have an officer with radar. Driving north on DE-1 you hit the state park, where its 55 mph. People routinely go 15-20 miles over here cause there are hardly any turns. However, sometimes cops ride up and down this road so I would suggest not taking to much of a risk here. Dewey and Indian Beaches are always speed traps. Its like 30 mph here, and it quickly reduces from 55. Cops always wait here to trap tourists. In Rehobeth Beach, the situation is much the same as in Bethany and Fenwick. If you are an out of state tourist, use caution on a road that is a giant speedtrap from the MD state line to Rehobeth.

Comment (7/2005): Almost every police department in the state of Delaware has either a RADAR or LIDAR (laser) unit in their cruiser ... not to mention a mobile computer and video camera. So, illiterate tourons that KNOW the speed limit and still speed deserve to get caught. The reason the speed limits are lower in the incorporated towns is because the houses sit adjacent to the highway and pedestrian traffic is high year round. At one time, the speed limt was increased in the winter months in Bethany Beac, South Bethany and Fenwick Island. Now it remains the same year round. By the way, if I recall correctly, Between the north limits of Bethany Beach traveling south through South Bethany, a distance of not much more than two miles, there are between 20 - 30 speed limit signs posted along the southbound lanes of Route 1 (aka Coastoal Hwy, Ocean Hwy, etc). It's the beach, not Montgomery County or D.C. and it sure as hell isn't Pennsyltucky!

Comment (8/2006): I spend a lot of time in Rehoboth. Getting there is tricky because of the speed traps along the route (See Ellendale and Greenwood), but once in Rehoboth I pretty much relax. Only an idiot would try to speed on the narrow, congested, pedestrian-filled streets of the town, and the city is pretty tolerant of bikers. They even included bikes-only parking spaces in the new expansion of the main drag. All in all, Rehoboth is a very tolerant place

Comment (12/2006): Everything said here is true, my advice, buy a good "quality" radar detector and enjoy the ride. It's all to flat for vascar, so just watch the rear mirror and turn the volumn up loud!
