Elsmere is the speed trap capital of Delaware. They have nothing else to do but pull you over. They will pull you over for going 36mph in a 35mph zone. Obey the limit and put your seat belt on. Don't even think of driving through the town if you've been drinking.

Comment (3/2003): Elsmere really preys on out of towners. I have a relative that lives in the town and every time I visit I see radar set up. I was ticketed for 9 miles over and had someone in car behind me, with Delaware plates, that verified my speed was below limit. Now I avoid doing any business in Elsmere!

Comment (6/2003): Elsmere cops also have a bad habit of writing speeding tickets and NOT showing up for court. I was ready to pay a speeding ticket at JP Court when the Judge actually asked me at arraignment if I really wanted to pay this ticket because he hadn't seen that particular officer in court in the past 6 (yes, SIX) years. Sure enough, the officer didn't show up at trial. My advice - tell the Elsemere cop that you want 9 over, and then take it to court.

Comment (12/2003): I like the Elsmere Police Department because they keep our town safe. Everybody says it's a speed trap but I know that when officers run radar on Rt.2 and vehicles are coming out of the City of Wilmington the speed limit is 25 m.p.h.. How is it a speed trap when the speed increases in Elsmere and cars are coming out of the City of Wilmington 50 mph + when there the speed limit is 25 mph

Comment (4/2004): This is in regards to the comments that Elsmere is a speed trap. That is not the case. If you are traveling on Rt2(Kirkwood Highway) coming out of Wilmington you will notice that the speed limit in the city is 25mph and that once you enter Elsmere it is increased to 35mph. The speed limit is 35mph on Rt100(Dupont Rd) and doesn't drop at all the entire length of Rt100 in the town of Elsmere so how can it be a speed trap. This is to the ignorant people who have made comments in regards to the speed enforcement. A speed trap is when for example you are in a posted speed limit of 35mph and then the speed drops to 25mph that is a speed trap. In Elsmere it is the opposite.

Police in Elsmere don't spend their time enforcing rules on it's crime causing citizens rather it enforces traffic fines for doing as much as 36 MPH in the 35 MPH zone, don't slow down through this town just avoid it and it's business district as well.
