Heading into Big Pine Key, the speed limit drops quickly from 55 to 45 to 35 as you approach a bridge in what appears to be the middle of no where. While this low speed limit once was a necessity, fences have since been erected to prevent the endangered Key deer from crossing the highway in this area. Enforcement of the 35 mph limit is common all the way through Big Pine, particularly at night.

Comment (11/2006): In five years i have lived on BPK I have seen No deer in the area mentioned. Its just another ploy by Monroe County to get $$ from us. Also all thru the lower keys the cops will run right up on your bumper, then back off, then run up close again, just trying to get you to speed up so they can nail you.. Be careful all thru the lower keys.. This year in March alone the key West cops handed out over 7,000 tickets, do you know how many that is a day??

Comment (11/2006): This is true. Key deer do, however, get past the fences and get on to the road, so enforcement is at a high level.
