Undercover (no lights on top) patrol vehicles regularly sit on the side of the road on the south and north ends of the city limits on Hwy 129, particularly about 1/2 mile inside the city limits on the south (Athens) side of the city, hiding just around swooping curves from both directions. The speed limit drops from 55 mph to 45 mph suddenly, and typically traffic is moving between 60-70mph on Hwy 129 as you enter Arcade. When you see the city limits sign, hit the brakes! Keep it under 50 mph while cruising through town! All white and all black crown vic's are used. Occassionally they will use "dummy" traps where they will sit cars about 1 mile apart so that when you pass one you think it is safe to speed up - it is not. I drive through regulary and there have been very few times, day or night, that the side of the road has been vacant of Arcade's finest, usually accompnied by some poor sucker that will be unwillingly contributing to the local government slush fund.
Comment (4/2002): Ilive in Arcade and the new construction of the Jefferson by-pass has given them more of an opportunity to zing us. The speed limit abruptly drops from 55 to 35 now and because it is a construction zone..double the fine! So don't look for them a 1/2 mile inside...they sit immediately inside...drop it down quick and keep it down til you are well past the propane dealer...they really do hide well.
Comment (5/2002): In a 2-page letter attempting to justify their speed trap, the mayor of Arcade stated that he "wished (the complainant) had contacted me personally so that we could have addressed the complaint in a professional and adult manner."
Comment (7/2003): I received a speeding ticket traveling through the city of Arcade in the area on the bypass directly in front of the police station. The officer didn't bother to say anything besides license and registration. He went back to his car and then came back with my ticket and court date. I went to the court date and 1 hour before court was due to start, I was joined by at least 40 other University students who had also been pulled over there. All ranges of speeding tickets from 10 over to 25 or so over. Basically, plead Nolo Contendere and they'll keep it off your record. Isn't that generous of this hick town's five man police station? Watch yourself in Arcade, they're ridiculous.
Comment (12/2007): I live in Maysville when I need to go to Athens I take 441 outside of commerce to go. It\'s longer but there is no going through Arcade.
Comment (03/2008): I live in Athens and go through Arcade regularly. Speed trap is a nice way of putting it. Also they will site you for improper lane change (no signal) even without another car on the road. Recently pulled over because they said the registation and tag didn\'t match up. We were released after the \"lady\" cop found four adults (50s) in the car. They will stop you for anything, use extreme caution. Watch speed as it drops from 55 to 45 at a rise in the road.
Comment (04/2008): Always remember if the officer does not let you about the testing of the radar unit the ticket he wrote is usless becuase state law says the officer must advise you of this right BEFORE writing the ticket.

Highway 129 is a main route between Jefferson, the county seat, and Athens. There is an abrupt and unexpected reduction in the posted speed limit in between. The "city" of Arcade is so small it isn't even on some maps and des not have a post office: the official address is a P. O. Box in Jefferson! Coming out of Jefferson, the road curves and goes uphill. Likewise, there is a curve coming from the other direction. The local police set up their radar at the road intersection and can "shoot" either direction, as well as in the direction of Highway 82, but mainly they stop the cars on 129. They are particularly apt to do this during low traffic hours, -- like early Sunday morning -- when individual cars are not slowed down by other traffic. The local state legislature representative, in Jefferson, is The Honorable (Ms.) Pat Bell. She will at least accept complaints, though the legislature has no jurisdiction in the matter. However, Georgia does have a law stating that if a municipality raises more than a certain percent of its revenue from traffic enforcement, it can have its state-authorized radar revoked.

There is only one road through this little town at the present time, although a bypass four-lane is under construction. The construction speed limit through town is 35 mph, and is enforced to the letter. There is very little space between signs, so you have to brake suddenly to be within the 35 mph zone. Other than taxes, there is little to no revenue coming into Arcade, hence the speed trap.

On 129, as you get near the "town" of Arcade, GA the speed limit suddenly drops from 55 to 45 with no change in the road condition, and minimal markings. The Arcade police sit less than a quarter mile from the speed change, usually near the court house with their lights completely off in the median at a dip in the road. They get you in either direction coming over a blind rise using instant-on K band radar.

In reference to the white mustang occassionally driven by the chief and other officers. It is not used as a traffic enforcement vehicle. There are many non traffic related reasons for stopping a vehicle. Also though it is not an uncommon occurance to recieve a traffic citation in Arcade it is uncommon to have an accident. Especially one involving serious injuries or fatalities. p.s Did you see those super sized 45 m.p.h. signs the state placed as you enter the speed zone while traveling south bound?
