On this road, of course the speed limit of 25 is unrealistic. A speed of 40 would be more like it. Anyways, because of this the UNIVESITY police get many people on this road.

Comment (12/2002): They use RADAR, and the county gets all the money they make on tickets. The road consists of a number of dangerous curves and has no shoulder on one side. University has an "r" in it.

Comment (9/2002): I agree 100%. The 25MPH is unrealistic, and this trap serves no other purpose other than raise revenue. River Road had low to moderate traffic, and no pedestrians. Less than 1/8 of a mile away is the River Road Loop, one of the most heavily traveled roads in Athens-Clarke County, with an enormous amount of pedestrian traffic, and no police presence. Look for a University of Georgia Police Department Ford Expedition right around the first curve heading away from the Ramsey Center.

If you're driving on College Station Road headed toward the University of Georgia campus, the cop sits on the right side of the road right above where Research Road intersects it, and points his radar up the hill toward the curve where the road passes through a small residential area. College Station Road is a four-lane road, yet only has a speed limit of 35 in the target area, and since people begin to head downhill slightly after rounding the curve, they begin to speed up just in time for the cop to zap them with radar. Adding further insult to injury is the fact that the speed limit gets raised to 45 the moment you pass Research Road, just a couple hundred feet down from where the cop sits.

West Broad Street becomes Atlanta highway as it passes the Howard Johnson's hotel and crosses the Middle Oconee River bridge. By this point, the road is six lanes wide with a 12-foot-wide median --- and a speed limit of 40. The cops like to sit in the parking lot of the KMart as you approach the new Epps Bridge Parkway interchange, and point their radar down at cars traveling westbound across the bridge. Before you cross the bridge, you head down a long hill which helps you build up speed, making it easy for Athens-Clarke County cops to make a killing off speeding tickets in this area.

Travelling through the intersection with Baxter St. headed southbound on Alps Rd., one will enter a school zone that drops the speed limit from the normal 35MPH to 25MPH. Watch for the flashing lights overhead. The school zone is enforced until 8:30AM--well after classes begin. I have never seen any child pedestrians in the area.

The speed limit on College Station Road going to campus changes from 35 to 45 right before you cross the bridge. It's a huge hill, and it's hard to stay under the limit without having your feet firmly on the brakes. It's probably the biggest speedtrap in Athens. The ridiculously low limit of 35 (five lane road which connects East Athens to the University of Georgia, mind you!) will never be raised because the ACC government makes a lot of money off of it. So many people get caught in this one. Be careful!

This speed trap is located on the loop 10 bypass as you are heading from Oconee County into Clarke County. As you cross counties the speed limit changes from 65mph to 55mph and is located on a down hill. I have been caught by this one because cops will either sit under the bridge or at the bottom of the hill. Be careful because they are they all the time.

Athens is a college town which houses University of Georgia. Basically any time there are going to be a lot of students coming back to athens (such as sunday afternoon/night or after a holiday) they have cops up there hidden in hard to see locations. The part which most obviously identifies this as a deliberate speed trap is the fact that the speed limit on HWY 316 is 65 everywhere except that it drops to 55 for a small stretch just before the turnoff that all UGA students would be taking. There is no change in road conditions that would merit such a speed limit change, in fact this stretch only has inlets with somewhat controlled access (entrance lanes) and there aren't many of those either. The rest of 316 has uncontrolled inlets all over the place and still a 65 mph limit. There are various locations where the cops give tickets that are really tricky such as when people come over a hill only a short while after the speed limit has changed.

The speed limit is only 45 and it is a 4-lane road! Cops will sit either across from the Woodlands or across from BP and catch people coming around the corner/over the hill. People get pulled over all the time on this road so watch out!
