This location is ideal for a laser trap. Speed limit is 60 while many are continuing at 70 or better from coming up the rural portion of I-380. Heading north, there is a very short sight distance from vehicles popping up over the hill and the laser unit located somewhere close to the Wilson AV overpass. Once you see the police vehicle parked alongside the roadway, your goose is cooked. Plus 5 seems to be tolerated.

The officers like to sit either in the Pest Control lot on the right hand side of the street or they like to sit right across the street next to a vacant building on 16th Ave/12th St. Be careful when coming down the hill from the viaduct, it is so easy to gain speed. The speed limit is 35mph. Sometimes instead of sitting there, they like to sit anywhere they can in the area of 16th Ave/12th St to 16th Ave/6th St. DRIVE CAREFULLY - THEY DONT GIVE YOU ANY BREAKS IF YOU GET STOPPED THERE!!!

Most of the time you can get away with going 5-10 miles over what's posted but occasionaly there will be MAJOR speed traps. They are especially common around the exits near H Ave. and 29th/32nd Street exits. South of downtown you should be careful between Hwy 30 and Wilson. It's also common for them to downtown on 380 under the 7th Street bridge.

The area most watched is from the "Blairs Ferry Rd NE" exit to the "7th Street East" exit. CRPD and HPD likes to sit on the shoulder of the enterance ramp at Blairs Ferry Rd facing north. They also like to sit under the overpasses and in the center midums during "medium heavy" traffic times and at night. They also work with helicopter support during traffic stings. It is not uncommon to see 3-6 cars working this area at times. (During sporting and music events).

A police officer generally is on 1st Ave EVERY NIGHT doing radar, but lately, one sits at the Warehouse shoes parking lot facing South towards downtown catching you coming from downtown after work.

If you go down the road that the Alpha International Building sits on, right by 16th Ave. NW,it is a long open road, ideal for someone to speed. There is also a city park by one of the Alpha International Warehouses where the cop likes to sit. Then the cop can radar out onto the road, and you can't see him until the last second. Hopefully this helped.

CRPD sit in median or under the Kirkwood Blvd/Highway 30 East exit ramp on I380 scanning both North and South-bound traffic. Time of day is usually mid afternoon or after 9pm. Both Ka band radar and Lidar are used. Trap is more frequent during the last 10 days of each month.

CRPD helicopter times traffic in this location very frequently (almost daily). It is in the reduced 55 MPH part of 380 between Quaker Oats and Wilson Ave SW. Police cruisers often wait near the Wilson Ave exit or near downtown to respond to helicopter radio calls.

This is a sporadic enforcement, usually two to three times a month, usually on Thursday or Friday nights. They will have multiple Cedar Rapids Police cars, and sometimes the Iowa Highway Patrol will also be involved. They sit in the median just prior to the HWY 30 East on-ramp overpass, and usually go after vehicles going South on I-380. I usually can see it coming when I see the brake lights lighting up on cars ahead of me! One time I didn't see it coming, and was 7 mph over the limit (60 mph) but didn't get pulled over.
