State cop likes to sit alongside Hwy 12 between Lowell and Lolo Pass. The posted limit is 50 (for a 75-mile stretch) and it's easy to speed up a bit in longer straight stretches (especially when passing). The cop is evidently the sole source of fundraising for Idaho County and has been known to ignore stranded motorists in his zest for apprehending those evil speeders, so watch out!

Comment (4/2005): This is a very dangerous section of road,I think the Speed limit should be droped lower on the curves, they are too fast, which has caused a lot of wrecks when people went too fast and drifted across on the other line and even ended up in he river which a lot of People have died, I live in Kooskia Idaho and have driven the road lots of times,Give all the speeders Tickets Local people and all.

Comment (4/2005): I also live in kooskia and have most of my life and yes hwy 12 has alot of bad corners but most of us who have lived here know that the roads can easily be drove faster than 50mph....the most dangerouse part of the whole thing is the wild life that crosses the roads here and as for the state police efficer he is more enterested in writing tickets than looking out for the well being of any of us out there.he has no public relation skill and provokes more than he helps and i hope he is replaced soon before he causes more problems for those of us who do care about our area.thank you for reading this.

Comment (12/2005): I agree with the previous comment. I got a ticket in October this year for 60 in a 50. This cop's time could be used for something else, like public safety. If my wife hadn't been in the car I would have probably gone to jail.

Comment (2/2006): The road is 50mph for a reason. Too many people think because it is 50 they can do 60. That may be so until a deer steps out 50 feet infront of you and you have nowhere to go.Do 50, maybe 55, but be very aware and on your toes. This is beautiful drive, enjoy it.

Comment (3/2006): I live in Lewiston and have traveled this section to Montana a lot for many years. I did get a ticket a year ago for 61 in a 50.I was passing a very slow diver when this happened. The State Cop did pull the slow driver over to and gave him a ticket to. A double for the cop!

Comment (3/2006): US 12 is far from a speed trap. I've driven this highway on a constant basis for nearly 3 years going back and forth from college to home. 50 MPH is more than appropriate especially with the abundance of wildlife and the idiots who do more than 70 MPH around there. I hit a deer on 12 a couple years ago because I was an idiot doing 60. If I had been going the speed limit I wouldn't have had to walk 20 miles to the lodge and call for a tow truck. For anyone who is smart, you'll do 50. If you have a death wish feel free to do closer to 80. And as far as the state trooper, yeah he's somewhat a jerk. But that doesn't mean there are some decent deputies in the area still. Don't judge all cops by one nimrod.
