When getting on the Skyway (southbound) from the Dan Ryan (Interstate 94) watch your speed on your entry for the first 1/2 mile. The Chicago police like to sit on the next two entrances, and they are easy to miss, but they don't miss you. Also, northbound on the Skyway, coming down off the bridge just before the $2.00 toll, watch for the man with the radar gun. Bear in mind that the Skyway has been a big boon-doggle for the City of Chicago. It has never paid for itself despite exorbitant tolls. It is patrolled by the CPD rather than the Illinois troopers, unlike the other expressways in town. Could it be that they lower the limit and patrol heavily in order to eek out a little more income? Indiana and Michigan drivers, especially, beware.

Watch out for CPD traffic units sitting at either of the above. The way to distinguish them is by looking at the light bar (Federal Signal Vision versus Whelen Edge or Federal Jet Strobe) and the beat card placed on the light bar (Usually begins with a 32 (Chicago only has 25 districts)). The key points on Lake Shore Drive are near Sheridan Road, Near Fullerton, near Soldier Field/Museum Campus, near McCormick Place, and Near the Field Museum of Science and Industry. The speed limit on Lake Shore Drive is 45 mph (some spots 40, and 35 around Soldier Field). These cops will sit around 63rd, 53rd, 47th, in the median between 47th and 23rd, on the side around Soldier Field, around Lake Point Tower and the Gold Coast, and in different locations between Fullerton and Sheridan.

Mostly on the northbound side. After the tight 30 mph turn that puts the Drake hotel behind you, theres an entrance ramp that also serves as a exit ramp for North Avenue (Lasalle Ave). The cop stands at the edge of that exit perpindicular to traffic with his window down and usually a laser gun aimed and ready. Sometimes they stand in a small area right after that exit.

Lake Shore Drive, around the Field Museum and Soldier Field, the speed limit drops to 35 mph, even though this is a newer, smoother roadway than the sections to the north and south. Most traffic flows safely at 55 mph here, and the Chicago Police are waiting for you behind the curves and overpasses. WINTER ONLY: The speed limit on North Lake Shore Drive is lowered from 45 mph to 40 mph every winter, supposedly to protect vegetation from salt spray. The horticultural benefit is unproven, but it is a great moneymaker for Da Mayor, as you remember the higher limit last time you drove this same road.

I have seen a dark green Camaro with tinted windows patrolling I-94 north of Addison up to Touhy. This a state trooper. I noticed the shoulder patch while sitting next to him in traffic. Normally I wouldn't worry but I have seen him at least 3 times in the last 3 months. I can't imagine him catching speeders since morning traffic is usually heavy. I think he might be part of a road rage or anti-should rider task force. Either way, this car looks like every other joker with late model Camaro and tinted windows. No spot light, no reflective markings, nothing...He is very hard to pick out until you have already done something wrong.

As you leave downtown headed South passing Soldier Field to your left, you approach a small hill. On the other side of that hill its common for Smokey to be waiting with radar focused. If caught, you're only hope is to bank hard to the right side of Lake Shore Drive and to attempt to exit on onto the I55 entrance ramp. Even if you are still pulled, your argument in court can be you were accelerating in preparation of entering I55.

Illinois State Troopers are now starting to hide in either the North/East- or Southbound lanes. They lay in wait for an unsuspecting Victim at night (usually after like 12AM when traffic is light) with all their lights off and the radar on. You'll only see them when you get right on them if you're in the right-hand lane...and by then, it's too late. I work at the Sprint PCS call center on Route 53 in Bolingbrook, and it seems that the Illinois State Troopers are starting to adapt this new stragety even further out from Chicago.

Whenever you are on Lake Shore Drive, be careful because Chicago Police Department is out in force. They have many, many hiding places like center median blind spots (like when you come down over the overpasses), off ramps, and even they hide along the lake front in the parks where you can't see them at all. Plus it seems that one car will hide and radio ahead to another down the road. Use caution on Lake Shore Drive. Seen Locations: 39th Street/Oakwood Blvd; 55th Street around the Museum of Science and Industry; Right off 12th Street (Roosevelt Road) right by the Field Museum of Natural History; Right off of Grand Avenue at the Navy Pier offramp; the Fullerton Avenue and Belmont Avenue offramps (to catch the party-goers on the weekend).

A marked squad sits betweenwhat i believe is a bridge house and a park district in a small alley that divides the two. Lighting is very dim and their lights are off. They clock people traveling westbound in Irving Park Road. Let me tell you they aren't the nicest officers around. The ones i've had a run in with were very surly and rude. as you are going north from Indiana into Chicago, you go on the skyway which is VERY high up and then come down about 3 miles into the toll booth. There is a cop behind anbuilding with his lights off clocking you as you come down the Skyway. He is totally hidden and you wont be able to see him at night even if you pass by him because he is behind a low building

I have seen 3 "speed enforcement" squad cars (the newer ones with the vector lightbar, not strobes) hidden on the north side of the bridge by 14th and Ashland. I have spotted them before as it is a regular practice, yet this one time they caught me because I was trying to pass another vehicle. He claims he used Radar to measure my speed, yet I saw no radar gun, nor did my radar detector go off? The speed limit is 30MPH, for ALL Chicago streets, so watch out.

All along 65th Street but specifically between Harlem and Cicero there are usually 2-3 marked police cars parked in the spaces between the factories that line 65th. Due to the sharp corners you usually will not be able to see these cars until you are perpedicular to them.

After the off ramp for the Addison exit, there is usually a white Impala that sits on the inside of the curve. I was following my friends home from downtown one night and he was speeding a bit and he got nailed. The car is usually there on a common basis.

Before the Waukegan/94 split (after the exit for Lake Ave.) there's a huge stretch of land that a lot of people like to speed. But the past few times I've been on it, I've seen a red Mustang that's a state trooper. Didn't really care for it until I glanced over one time and saw the car speed by on the shoulder with it's lights flashing and going crazy. It's only hectic from the Lake Ave. exit up till the split.

51st Street from Central Avenue west until the street ends (around Nashville) Cook County Cops strictly enforce stop signs here. There are 4 stop signs in a mile and a half stretch of road, so you better stop fully at each and every one of them. They like to hide in parking lots. By the time you see them, you're already at the stop sign, so slamming on the brakes at that point will make you look suspicious enough to be pulled over. Make it a habit of stopping fully at all these stop signs. A fraction of a second stopping saves a ticket.

On my way to woodfield mall one nite, the toll is usually backed up. as i was nearing it i saw a red mustang with the grill flashing cuz of the lights and sitting inside was a state trooper (he was siting on 90 e going back into the city). after paying the toll there was a black camaro with another trooper in it (this one, on 90 w). saw them bust a VW golf GTi, probably racing or something.

The Kennedy express lanes are actually near impossible to enforce. The simple fact is there is no speed enforcement in the express lanes. The express lanes are too narrow for speed traps and I have it on good authority that the Illinois State Troopers will not risk making traffic stops on that particular stretch of I-94. So good news for a change, happy and safe driving!

This 1 is different, there is absolutely no enforcement in Mt. Greenwood it's like CopLand here but it's out of control. No one stops for stop signs & kids do 40-50 mph on the side streets because Daddy will make sure it's taken care of. Not a good situation.

Exiting the Ashland ave exit ramp from I-55 north. Ill. State troopers are randomly flagging down cars as they pull up to the stop sign below the viaduct. There checking for suspicious vehicles especially on older cars. Your basically trapped since there is no way out of the situation once you have committed to exiting for Ashland Avenue.
