This has been posted on this site repeatedly as a speed trap. The speed limit in this 300-population town goes rapidly from 65 mph speed zone to 30 mph zone. The fine with costs was over $165 for a little over 20 miles over 30 mph speed limit (!!). I suggest people notify the Kansas Department of Transportation if trapped as other cities are not allowed to lower speeds this much.

Comment (6/2002): Last I checked the Kansas Department of Transportation set the speed limit not the the city. All the cities that have a highway that goes right through them are 30 mph. If you were going 20 miles over the speed limit you deserved a ticket. After checking with the Kansas Highway Patrol the fine of $165 is the same amount that all the County District Courts use.

Comment (6/2002): Actually all towns that have a highway go through are not 30 mph. Might look at U69 in Arma (45mph), Frontenac (50 mph), Ft. Scott (40 & 35 mph), etc.

Comment (6/2002): Wrong statement about the speed within the city limits being governed by the the department of transportation. Thecity not by the state controls the speed limit within their boundries. This is a Speedtrap because the police department is paid from fines collected and if you don't stop people, you don't get paid those high dollars. Check out iola.com and read how some of the fools that live there think it just great that they recieve "free" police protection for all who must travel through their town.

Comment (03/2008): I just stumbled onto CopSpy for the first time and here it is March of 2008. I thought I\'d look up Bronson, KS because I got a ticket there about 5 years ago. At that time the speed limit was 30MPH as it had been for many years. I have been passing thru there since 1975. I used to stop there for gas. Since I got my ticket I haven\'t stopped at all and I never will again. I felt it was a speed trap setup. Shortly after I got my ticket I notice someone put up billboards with streamers at each side so you couldn\'t miss the speed trap (it seems like the billboards came down within a year though). In my case I was in the 65 zone, let off the gas to coast down to speed when I saw the 30 sign. When I noticed the cop, I glanced down and was at 39. If memory serves me, he said I was going 46. I think it was a year or so later they raised it. Someone here said it was 45 now but my memory recalls it is 40. At any rate, I hadn\'t seen any cops running radar for quite a while until a week or so ago when I went thru. Yeah, I do slow down now but I still feel when it was at 30 that was just too sudden of a drop from the 65. No more stops for me anymore there to get gas. That town paid me back with a ticket (I think close to $100) for all the gasoline business I\'d given them for many many years.

Intersection of Highway 54 and Main St. City cops in either white Ford Victoria or Black SUV with K-9 markings. Operate 24/7. Have visual and radar site of both East and West city limits from single vantage point. Speed drops from 65 to posted 30 MPH in very short distance. Must brake to get legal. Citizen Speed Trap warning signs posted on private property at both edges of town. Small town of less than 400 residents cannot support a six-person, two vehicle, one drug dog operation from current tax base, thus the highway robbery.

Thecity not by the state controls the speed limit within their boundries. This is a Speedtrap because the police department is paid from fines collected and if you don't stop people, you don't get paid those high dollars.

Speed drops very rapidly coming into town-no real chance to slow to speed without jamming on brakes.Officer sits in lot just past sign and clocks vehicles.I came in behind two vehicles with Kansas plates who were going as fast as I was and they weren't bothered.I had New York Plates.

speed trap still in effect, but speed limit has been raised to 45 m.p.h. not as many tickets being written, which makes them mad. planning on voting the entire city councel out next election, which will enable us to get rid of our unwanted guests!
