Essentially anyone with out-of-state tags in Kansas is fair game for being pulled over, regardless of whether or not you're speeding. I was pulled over twice on a recent roundtrip between KC and Wichita - once in each direction. Southbound I was pulled over near Emporia and given a ticket for 15 over (I was really closer to 3-4 over), but fortunately the officer had a change of heart and gave me a warning instead. Northbound, between Emporia and KC I had a patrolman pull out of the median behind me, pull into my blind spot and follow me for 5 miles, before pulling me over to tell me I had a screw loose on my license plate! Friends who live in Kansas tell me that it's a major throughpoint for drug-runners - with its central location and major crosscountry interstates (I-70, I-35) I can believe it. The result is that the Kansas state troopers are aggressively pulling over motorists with out-of-state tags in search of those with cocaine in the glove box. They nail plenty of them, but they also nail plenty of hapless travellers too.

Comment (1/2003): Through town do not go more than 5-6 miles over the speed limit. I got a warning for going 39 m.p.h in a 30 m.p.h zone. He was a state trooper and was fairly nice since I was honest with him and told him i was going around 40 m.p.h. I was born and lived in emporia for 18 years and sometimes the cops can be firm so be careful when going through emporia. As far as I-35 goes I travel between 82 m.p.h-83m.p.h in a 70 m.p.h zone and they never messed with me. I have got the lights flicked on me before though.

Comment (3/2003): Yeah and traveling 70 m.p.h on the interstate in kansas feels like your crawling.

Comment (3/2003): Speed limits are set for a reason. 30 means 30 and 70 means 70. If it was you that had to clean up the bad accidents you would slow down.

Comment (5/2003): Watch out for the white camaro state trooper. He is ALWAYS sitting on I-35 in Emporia using both radar and laser. He WILL pull you over for minor violations. I live in Emporia and work right next to the Interstate, he always has people pulled over. He Travels north and south bound, as well as stationary. BE AWARE the speed limit changes to a 45 mph zone south bound, right before the turnpike.

Comment (6/2003): My daughter had an experience in I-35 near Emporia, also. She, too was ticked for going 15 mph over when only going approx. 5-7 mph over. The cop also refused to allow her to look at the radar to verify the speed. In a separate incident involving the same cop, she was along the side of the road with car trouble (she's single, 19yo) and the cop pulled up behind her, evaluated the situation and then said "I'm a cop, not a mechanic." He didn't offer to call for help or anything. He left her alone by the side of the road. A few months later the State Trooper's association called soliciting funds. I laughed at them, read them the riot act and told them that they'll never get a dime from me unless they clean up their act.

Comment (6/2003): This Sunday (6-7-2003) I was pulled over by an Emporia police officer. I have had plenty of experience driving through Emporia and seeing folks getting pulled, so I never speed through there. And this time was no exception. I was travelling 55 mph in a 55 speed limit. And I was the only person on the road. The officer was turning around (to my direction) before he ever knew I existed. As soon as he noticed my North Carolina tags, he flew over into my lane and trailed me. Blammo, the lighths come on. "Sir, I clocked you as travelling at 72 mph." Downright fabrication. Thankfully, I knew I had done nothing wrong and he and I both knew that he was lying. So he let me go with nothing. All I was guilty of was having out-of-state plates. Is that now probable cause in Virgina? Methinks the cops in Emporia are getting kickbacks from the lawyers. Hmmmm. Anyone with more info on this?

Comment (10/2003): There has been a high level of state trooper activity near Emporia on I-35. I had my cruise control set for 85 mph and was ticketed for 90 mph. I was speeding and got caught. Watch out for the large support pillars under bridges. One trooper likes to use that for cover and nail you as you crest a hill. Prime hunting spot...

Comment (11/2003): I went through here between industrial road and merchant street going 78 m.p.h in a 70 m.p.h zone and got the lights flicked on me.

Comment (1/2004): It is ok to drive between 80-85 mph on I-35 in kansas just slow down to about 75-80 mph in emporia

Comment (6/2004): Moved to Kansas from New Jersey. I've been pulled over 8 times simply for having Jersey plates. Always near the Bedo Junction on I-35

Comment (8/2004): You think 70 is slow? come on! I'm from Illinois, and it's only 65! (trucks: 55) now that's slow! - 8-22-04

Comment (8/2004): you think driving 70 is slow? come on! at least in Kansas and Missouri the speed limit is 70, in Iowa and Illinois, it's only 65

Comment (03/2008): I got in between a car & a cop. The car had taken the cops turn at a intersection.( the cop had the right of way, but the other car went instead 7 cut him off.) I took my turn, & the other car got away. So the cop got mad that the other got away & stopped me! Tried to say it was for a dirty tag. Yet he turned on his lights before he could even see my tag! And it was not dirty, as I showd him as we sat in his car. Gave me a warning. Watch out; Emporia police will stop you for anything, even if you are doing nothing wrong, & then they make excuses for it. Yet, if you ever need to call on them, they do nothing!

When driving through emporia, my hometown I would recommend staying at no more than 5-6 m.p.h over the speed limit. I got pulled over and got a warning by a state trooper for going 38 in a 30. Watch your speed going through this town.

This is an intersection at highway 99 & road L. There is a carpool parking lot here. The police & sheriff sit here a lot. And, they sometimes sit blacked out, on the road, so you can\'t see them till you are right there. You even have to be careful so you don\'t hit their car at night!
