The entire length of U.S 23 through Catlettsburg is a speed trap. Upon entering the city limits, the speed drops to a crawling 35 mph for a good 6-7 mile stretch, forcing you to feel like you have to speed to get any where, as the locals fly through at 45 to 50 mph. There is no set place for the city police to set up the trap, as they do it in various locations throughout the day and night, but it is usually at either end of the city limits, or dead center before you start up a large hill in the center of town.

Comment (7/2003): 35 mph isn't exactly "crawling" through business and residentual neighborhoods.

Comment (7/2003): The stretch of Rt. 23 between the Marathon Station and the Grade School is in no way considered a residential or business area. That is the area you should watch for.

Comment (9/2003): The speed limit being 35mph through Catlettsburg is crazy. Down town Catlettsburg I can see it being 35mph but the main stretch should atleast be 45mph.

Comment (6/2004): Ashland's speed limits are 45 MPH, and the Ashland and Cattlesburg segment of US 23 were designed and constructed at the same time. It was lowered in Cattlesburg numerous years ago due to "residental" whining even though there are few houses on the route anymore. The cops _LOVE_ to patrol the segment that has shoulders and crests the large hill -- also where I got my first ticket :-(

Comment (6/2004): All of US 23 is a spped trap. As a Kentucky gal that drives 1800 miles per week, for 14 years in 6 states as a part of my job. I have had three speeding tickets in my lifetime. ALL OF THEM IN A 30 MILE SECTION BETWEEN CATLETTSBURG AND LOUISA ON US 23. One at 60mph in a 55 mile zone and one at 70. Coal trucks blow you off the road going 70-80mph, but those of us with out of state license (WV) pay the price. Two broken windhshields in 2 years from coal trucks and 2 speeding tickets. If I drive US 119 from Charleston to Williamson the speed limit is 65mph. Ky is getting a terrible reputation for this section of road, it's such a shame!

Comment (1/2005): The speed limit that is posted in this area is needed.Drivers that frequently drive this area, are aware of the need to keep speeds down while driving in this area, the need for traffic control in this area is vital to the safety of everyone trying to proceed along US 23, and the traffic that is trying to make turns along this route. This area is very well known for producing serious accidents and sometimes fatal accidents in cases where the speed of vechiles traveling at an excessive speed through this area. It may be an inconvience to some motorists that are traveling through this area. But local residents or frequent visitors, are very supportive of the posted speed limit and feel that this speed is very respectful for all motorists using this highway

From the city limits of the town of Catlettsburg you BETTER do 35 which is the posted speed limit. It is very easy to go faster than the posted limit as it is a 4 lane highway and there is some small hills and long straightaways. The police usually have 2 cars patrolling, as you pass one there will usually be another within a mile. I have been pulled over for no reason (just a bogus one) by the KY State Police. It seems they are just as bad to stop you especially late night. It would not hurt to raise the speed limit to 45, but it wont happen as it has been a trap for over 20 years. Ashland did raise their speed limit to 45 as you are coming into town from Catlettsburg (Good move Ashland)!
