We spent the night in Alexandria and were leaving town about 8:30. Traffic was non existent. I was the 3rd car, in the outside lane, in a string of cars entering I-49 going south. Patrol car parked on the right side of the entrance ramp. Other cars were LA cars while I was out-of-state. The two LA cars were passing me on the inside lane when we passed the patrol car. We were all traveling 5+ miles over the speed limit. I was stopped and when I ask why I, the slower car, was stopped, the response was, "We can't get 'em all." Cost the out-of-state motorist more than $150. Real speeders (LA plates) - $0! Last time I'll stop there!
Comment (7/2003): On the 5th of June the year 2003 my husband and I were traveling on I-49 going south. It was about 2:10 in the afternoon. Traffic was not heavy but was moving at a steady pace. The speed limit was 70 miles per hour which is what my husband was going when we were stopped. We reside in San Francisco California and it was understandable that we were stopped for no reason at all other than the fact we did not have LA license plates. It was very humiliating for us because we have traveled this route for the past 5 years without being stopped for something of this nature. My husband was further humiliated by beingasked to show the rental papers on our rental car. Then he was told by the patrolman that he pulled off on the wrong side of the road which was the only safe thing for him to do and to avoid causing a accident trying to cross into the far left lane. My husband is a safe driver and we always obey the traffic speed when traveling cross country. It was not necessary for the patrol to delay us that way. Hopefully something will be done about these types of incidents.
Comment (9/2003): The troopers don't just catch out-of-staters. Quit whining. I've lived in Louisiana all my life, and I was caught July 3, 2003, by a trooper. The speed limit on I-49 is 70. I had come up behind some jokers going about 55 and moved into the left lane to go around them. It just so happened a trooper was hiding in the trees in the median about 10 miles south of Alexandria as I passed. He said I was going 83 (no way ... 75 maybe). I also had a sick dog in the back of my vehicle I was trying to get to a vet. Didn't matter. He wrote me up and I contributed a nice chunk of change to the Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office. Oh well. Beware of the troopers lurking in the median when I-49 starts to get hilly about 10 miles south of Alexandria! (And yes, the dog is fine now).
Comment (2/2004): No they catch out of towners too! I had a shreveport license plate on my Saturn SC2 and I was traveling north about 10 miles south of Alexandria when a cop was pulled over giving someone else a ticket. I crossed over to the left lane and kept going the speed I was, 70. I then crossed back over to the right lane and about a mile down the road I saw the trooper coming over a hill and ahead of me was traffic wanting to veer onto the interstate. I chose not to switch lanes and hit my brakes to slow up to let them in and guess what? The trooper pulls me over said I was going 82 in a 70! I asked to see his radar and he choked for a sec and said I was pacing you. I said well I'm not signing your ticket I wasn't speeding. We went round and round on this for about 10 minutes and he told my fiance that if I didn't sign the ticket he would start finding things. He told me he was going to take me to jail which I agreed he could and in the end he finally wrote me a ticket for "not wearing a seatbelt" which I was wearing! Cops are crooked and very money hungry.
Comment (3/2004): to the last person you dont even come close to the truth. the officer cut you a brake and your still crying. It is people like you that make us look bad and yes I am a cop.
Comment (7/2004): I know quite a few alexandria/rapides parish cops. I see MANY MANY tickets amended down to "No seatbelt." Trust me.. catching a no seatbelt instead of a speeding ticket is a BIG break. P.S. No cop would EVER say "I will start finding things," because ANY cop would know that one or two reports on that type of threat would get them heavily investigated, put on suspension, and more-than-likely busted because someone who would say that wouldn't use that just once.Liars need to be punished anyway.
Comment (1/2005): To be fair I believe troopers catch anybody, regardless of residency, (state, local)
Comment (03/2008): Once you get into town, the speed limit is 60 even on I-49, slow down. I travel to Alexandria several times a week and do not have any problems; just don\'t go 70 in town.
Comment (06/2008): In Louisiana police aren\'t required to show you their radar display. Some models don\'t even \"lock in\" your speed.

From the South going North. Just entering into Alexandria there is a speed change near overpass in a curve. Behind the bridge they sit. One stopped me after following me because I had an old dismissed assult charge from when I was a kid. I am 45 now... amazing.

APD Motorcyle officer is usually sitting in the shadows (under trees, darkest part of the street) on the corner of Bush Ave. and Hill St. in the garden district. I've seen them on both sides of the street, and some times just one officer, sometimes 2. I happen to find they are usually there early morning to mid-day.
