For no particular reason, the speed limit drops from 65 to 55 about two miles before the bridge. The Maine Staties stand there, and wave over speeders in groups. I have seen three cop-cars lined up, waving over several speeders. I observed this going north, and watched my speed on the way down that afternoon.
Comment (7/2002): I've lived in the Kittery area for over forty years (and I'm a cop there) yet I've never seen the speed trap mentioned here. The route 1 bypass - that's another story :-)
Comment (8/2002): The reason speed drops in this zone is due to population. ie: city of Portsmouth NH. I have never seen a speed trap in Kittery Me. But watch out when u enter NH! at the bottom of the bridge.
Comment (9/2002): Out of staters watch out, with all the construction going on the entire lenght of I-95, you never know what the speed limit is. The cops hide in the construction lane and check all the cars. They go after out of staters because they know you can't take the time for a trial - plus they double the fine. Try going the speed limit - you get blown off the road and trucks cut you off when they pass you. Watch out the exits below Wells.
Comment (9/2002): Kittery the town itself is one big speed trap. Ive lived there for 25 years almost every road is 25mph which is ridiculous. Watch out for route 1. Maine Staties arent bad its the KPD you need to watch out for.Kittery Traffic circle which is by KPD headquarters is another place you need to keep an eye out for.
Comment (1/2003): Don't bother going to court - if you get caught for speeding - you are guilty - no if ands or buts!
Comment (4/2003): One further note to watch out for, State police use a variety of vehicles. Jeep cherokees, Impalas, Crown Vickies, Luminas you get the picture all un marked and a variety of colors and civilian plates
Comment (4/2003): On the maine turnpike, be especially aware of a new breed of unmarked cars. A black jeep with tinted windows, a red pickup truck, and a silver car... All are intented to blend in completely with the surrounding traffic so they can pick and choose which cars to pull over.
Comment (9/2003): This Labor Day weekend (2003) I saw a black Cherokee with yellow flashing lights and two guys in construction duds under the open hatch with a what looks to be a survey tripod. It was a laser gun. Further up on the exit 6 on ramp was a line of troopers waiting to chase down their prey. A couple of exits sound on the southbound side, a similar set-up was next to one of the orange, portable announcement signs. All in plain sight and obvious (but not obvious to what was happening). Of course one would question why construction crews would be out on Labor Day...
Comment (10/2003): I commute from Portland to Mass. and have seen this Black Cherokee set up to look like a construction crew at least twice a week since labor day

State Police set up a Rader Speed Trap on the North Bound Lane of Route 95. The speed limit crossing from New Hampshire into Maine is 55 MPH. The speed limit does not increase to 65 mph until around Mile Marker 3 or 4. Speed Traps are routine from the Maine/NH border to around Mile Marker 4.

The speed limit for the first few miles after crossing the bridge on I95 from NH to Maine are 55mph which is well below normal (safe) traffic speed (especially as you are carrying speed after going down the other side of the bridge) The Maine Troopers appear to run at least a monthly sting here where they waste countless tax dollars by hiding 5 cruisers out of sight on an exit ramp. One trooper runs the radar it seems and then they dispatch the hidden cruisers. I have counted up to 8 Cruisers involved in this program before and no doubt they run this up and down 95 regularly from Kittery to Portland. I have yet to be involved in it, but always think it is "A wonderful welcome" to tourists visiting the so called Vacationland I call home. Stick to 65mph for a few miles once you hit the top of the bridge until you are 5 miles up the road to be safe.
