Coming into town from Augusta on Water street there is sometimes a cop parked on the left facing Augusta right after you go under the rail bridge. Cops will also sit on the right side of the road facing town also on water street as you come out of town right before the limit goes from 25 to 40. This only occurs at night, usually late and you will NOT spot these guys until it's too late.
Comment (6/2004): To be fair, this is a small town built in the 18th and 19th centuries where the main street is narrow and highly traveled. Traveling more than 5 MPH over the limit will get you stopped if they see you. Travel from Augusta to Gardiner is faster and smoother by taking Rt 9 from Augusta to Randolph and across the bridge to Gardiner. Not many cops or traffic that way.
Comment (10/2002): I have to say these guys have their act together, I went to court and lost. I tried everything. My advice don't speed because there's no fighting the tickets they give. THey have there stuff together in that little "small" town.
Comment (3/2003): This place is PEPPERED with Maine's finest. While I haven't been pulled over in Hallowell, I have always known enough to keep both eyes out, especially at night... sometimes, when driving from Gardiner to Hallowell, you can see upwards of six cruisers out there!
Comment (8/2003): With a friend that worked for the Public Works Department and told me some of the stories of these guys. I found it safer to choose a different route. If I was coming from Gardner to Augusta, I would cross the river and drive up Rt.9. It was easier then dealing with these guys. I do this now to avoid them when I am driving home to visit the parents.
Comment (4/2004): I work nights at a nursing home in Gardiner and I travel from Winslow so I go through Hallowell six nigths a week and my radar detector goes crazy right as you enter hallowell I see someone pulled over just about every night.
