I just heard from a friend that is a police officer that Gardiner is stepping up radar patrol. They now have a motor bike officer who is the man when it comes to speed tickets. They also just hired two big hitters from the Speed trap town of Hallowell.

This is a very common location for aircraft speed details. Each detail runs for 4 hours and consists of the MSP Cessna 182 and 4-6 troopers on the ground writing tickets. They typically will write 75-100 tickets per detail. Common times are M-F 0800-1200 or Saturdays 1100-1500. Speeds are typically 80+ although they will stop a 78 if things are slow (not common). The trap is typically on the northbound side of 295. Vehicles are clocked by aircraft as far south as mile 43. Othertimes, a trooper will sit at Mile 49 and hit the northbound cars with radar or laser. Cars used for these speed details include marked and unmarked medium-blue Crown Vics, an unmarked charcoal Crown Vic, and a maroon unmarked Chevy Impala equipped with front and rear facing radar antennas. Other locations for the same type of trap include Mile 114 (Sidney), Mile 160 Etna/Dixmont and an area 10 miles south of Houlton. The state budget includes funding for an additional 60 aircraft speed details per year for each of the next two years. Because they can't work in inclement weather, or at night, you will see a lot of blue lights on Maine roads this summer. Because this is about generating revenue, rather than highway safety, you should be especially careful on Maine roads this summer.
