When you go throught this stretch watch your speed, but be very careful in HILL CITY!!!!! The speed limit is 30 mph, if you go 31, your bound to get a ticket. on several occasions i was driving through there and only went 1 or 2 miles over the speed limit and got nailed. The first ticket was $100, and the second was $200 becaues he thought i had learned my lesson.

Comment (5/2002): I cant say how important it is to use your cruise control on this stretch, set it at 55 and no more! On my way back home to Grand Rapids I saw 13 (no joke) police, Sheriffs, Hwy Patrols Between Aitkin and Hill City. Once you are in Itasca County which is North of hill city it is smooth sailing.

Comment (5/2003): When the sign shows a speed limit of 30 MPH thats what it means. Did the $200 fine sink in yet?

Comment (6/2003): I sort of soubt these comments. I was pulled overt in Hill City on a Weekend Day. I was a tourist who did not live near the town. Iwas doing close to 50 in a 30 and was only given a VERBAL Warning. These guys are just doing their jobs.

Comment (6/2003): I was fortunate enough to only get a warning in Hill City last summer (2002) but I learned that the speed limit here IS 30 mph. Thank you to the officer that gave me that warning and NOT a ticket.

Comment (6/2003): 5/2002 is full of it. There is one Aitkin Trooper that patrols 169 from Garrison to Hill City. You getting caught speeding doesn't make it a speed trap.

Comment (6/2003): We travel to Rapids all the time during the summer and agree that this stretch is notorious for being patrolled heavily. I will say that the only ticket I ever received was for a expired license and that in all my travels I have received three (3) warnings. I have been very lucky because I do generally go about 63 miles per hour from our home to GR. Generally, you deserve a ticket when you get one so just be careful traveling from Garrison through Hill City. After Hill City there seems to be less patrols.

Comment (9/2003): Oh, give me a break. Who do you think you are kidding? If you got a ticket for speeding I can assure you that you were going over 1-2 mph over the limit. You make me laugh.

Comment (12/2003): I can't believe people think they are going to get a ticket for 1-2 mhp over the limit. Its not worth the time to pull someone over for that, unless you were doing something else that you shouldn't have been

Comment (2/2004): I'm originally from that area and the police noticed a few years ago that nobody was slowing down going past Hill City. The majority of drivers were going 50-60 MPH!
