The speed limit through Laurel is just 50 MPH because of the multiple exits crammed into such a short space. If that wasn't bad enough, the speed limit drops to 40 going in to the tight S-curve in the middle of Exit 95C. Heading north, cops sit in the grass on the shoulder between the left curve and the right curve, waiting for someone to do a reasonable speed, like 50, in the 40 MPH zone. City leaders in the 50's and 60's wanted the interstate built like this to show off downtown Laurel and to avoid building a bridge over a lake east of town. Gee, thanks.

Comment (5/2002): 4/28/02 police taking radar same spot as listed above

Comment (9/2002): This is a definite speedtrap. They're horrible. You go from 70 to 50 almost immediately, and the cops hide near 16th avenue so they can get their quota. Worse yet, they have no compassion. They are heartless fools. They did this on purpose to catch travelers. Avoid Laurel at all costs. Take highway 45 through alabama. Chances are, you'll make the same time if going north OR south unless heading to New Orleans. Horrible road. They catch SO MANY PEOPLE. Laurel is not a place you want to drive through.

Comment (1/2003): I've grew up in Laurel so I know all about Laurel's famous speed trap so when I always return to Laurel to visit I make sure to be extra carefully since I know live in Dallas and a Texas license plate is like a pot of gold to most cops. I was driving back to Dallas when I saw one of Laurel's finest sitting on the other side of the Beacon St. so I made sure I was going well under the speed limit but it didn't matter he pulled me over and said I was tailgating and swirving within my lane! First of all there was only on other the car on the road and I was not tailgating. He asked me if I knew why he pulled me over and I said it's because I had a Texas tag. He's said no and ask me to step out of my car and frisked me! I guess I looked guilty of something more than a traffice violation ie. being a young Black man. He asks me over and over did I have any drugs on me or in my car. He ask me where I was coming from and I told him from my father's and I gave him the address and phone number in case he didn't believe me. He then ask me where was I going and I said Dallas. He asked which highways I was taking and I told the highways and every little detail of my trip to show him. After all of that nothing, he just said don't swirve and if you get tired pull over and take a nap. Boy was I ticked off but my Grandma told me that I59 has become a major drug corridor and I guess I looked liked the sucker that was going to bring him that dream drug bust!

Comment (3/2003): I'm not sure why any engineer in their right mind would design an interstate the way it is designed through Laurel. However, there's a good reason the speed limit is 40 mph through town. Many fatal accidents have taken place because drivers failed to heed the warnings. They're in the process of straightening out the "S" curve right now.

Comment (8/2003): I work in the medical field in Laurel. YES, the interstate is a VERY poor design. But, this is NOT a speed trap... people working at South Central Regional Medical Center know all too well how many 18-wheelers flip in the S-curve. I have seen first hand a Ford F-150 flip in front of me because the driver was going too fast through the curve. The truck ended upside down in the hospital parking lot. I hate speed traps... I really do. But, the speeds on I-59 through Laurel are more than reasonable considering how many people I have seen die at the SCRMC emergency room. You look at those kids after their daddy dies and tell me that 40 is too slow for that kind of turn.

Comment (10/2003): I also work in Laurel as a 911 dispatcher. I travel north on 59 to get to work and get off at the Beacon St(S-curve)exit. The speed limit drops from 70 THEN 60 to 50 to 40 mhp just past the N.16th Ave exit before the S-curve. There is no reason anyone can not slow down in increments of 10 mhp. Not everyone speeds thru here and we get hundreds of calls from motorists alerting us about speeders...so when you are pulled over don't always blame it on the police, deputies and highway patrol...the car that just passed you while you were on the side of the road getting a ticket may just be the one that made that call!

Comment (01/2008): I nearly always drive the speed limit but if you slow down to the speed limit some people nearly run into the the back of you. There should be more warning signs miles down the road and more caution lights or pick the speed up a bit. It seems like a dangerous way to make money to me.

Just north of Laurel on I-59 there are usually one or two cops there who just wait for anyone to speed. They are usually in the same spot (theres even a dirt patch underneath their car since its been there so many times) and they usually grab people at total random. I've passed them at 80 without getting a ticket, and passed them at 75 and got a ticket so they make no sense. But be careful, they seem to go after young people.

City police have two locations immediately after speed reduced locatons backed off traffic lanes running radar. These locations are just south of 16th ave exit and just north of Cook ave exit. This stretch includes one of the few 40 MPH speed limits on an Interstate highway in the United States. A real candy jar for the Laurel police.
