In the past 11 years my profession has moved me to Kokomo, Tylertown, Columbia, Foxworth and now Biloxi, MS. Out of all of these towns/cities the Columbia police department and Marion County Sheriffs department has the most uneducated, under trained, ignorant and abusive police. If you’re wealthy, from out of town or black don’t dare get stopped (by the way I’m white and somewhat wealthy.) The Sheriffs department was investigated by the FBI for a hanging death in 2000…some say sheriffs deputies did it. The jailhouse is always in scandal for financial, abuse and neglect problems. Walter Payton’s dad (the famous football player) was arrested in Columbia in 1978 and died in his cell the same night because the uneducated police officer thought he was drunk when in fact he was having an attack.
Comment (8/2003): Is there a Highway 90 in Columbia, MS?
Comment (9/2003): US Highway does not go through Columbia, MS. Get your highways right if you want to help someone. That should be US 98.
Comment (04/2008): I can back that up. I drive a 2001 Oldsmobile and have been stopped with the same excuse. A guy I went to high school with was the officer and when he realized it was me he changed his attitude. Other comments are correct, the are harrasing, but to be honest the majority of the officers are black and do most of the harrasing.

Coming through Columbia on Hwy 98 either way, be it East or West, be aware. The City Cops now get to patrol Hwy 98 from Mack Grubs Motors almost to the Pearl River bridge. I have noticed the Most people are pulled over on this streach of Hwy, then anywhere else in the City or the County for that matter. I was pulled over a couple of days ago as I just turned from Hwy 98, I noticed that a City Police car was following me. I turned off of Hwy 98 to Lumberton road. As I was Pulled over, I knew that I had not done anything wrong, and I was not speading at all. As I got out of my car, I asked the cop, "What is the Problem" He replied, "We have had a report on a vehicle like yours, and we are to pull it over" This is where it gets just plain stupid. I drive a 1970 GTO restored. I asked the Officer, "How many 1970 GTO's do you see on the roads anymore. He could not answer the question, and asked me for my liscense. I gave it to him, and then I asked for his name, and badge #, I was told that I could go on my way. The Cops in Columbia are noted for their Harrasement policy's, and their Speed Traps. Just ask anyone that has been thru Columbia on Hwy 98.
