Sheffiff has purchased 2 cars just for enforcement, and brags they have a quota to write 80-100 tickets a day in this town of 35,000. Tourists avoid Butte at all costs, since speed limits are not well posted and tickets count on your record. Drivers at risk anywhere in town.

Comment (12/2003): Stay on the freeway! Do not stop in Butte! Entire state avoids Butte! When you take photos to the judge to prove there is no visible speed limit sign, he waves them away and replies "I have to tell you I was a patrolman for 26 years. Here's your fine; go pay it!".

Comment (9/2004): butte is definitely the stereotype small town where tickets are given to "outsiders" just to bring in money to a slowed economy....don't stop in butte!

Comment (5/2005): Lived in Butte all my life, no speed tickets, bought a car in Alabama, came back with it with Alabama plates, and had a speeding ticket within 3 days..doing 35 in a 25. Speed traps mainly uptown, on Dewey BLVD, and near country club, but can be anywhere.

There is a crosswalk at this location, allowing students of Butte High to walk accross the street to their cars. I have seen countless people get pulled over for going anything over 15 mph. The worst time is during lunch hour- 11:30-1:00. Other bad times are before and after school. There is usually an officer parked on the side of the road just waiting.
