Alpine is a small community. The eastern side of the town includes RT 9W, it runs parallel to the western side of palisades parkway, which has a separate state patrol group, and has two intersecting exits/entrances with the parkway. 9W at that point runs for about 3 miles, almost straight, about 3 lights that favor rt 9w travelers,it is quite open.Police officers seem to spend a great deal of time on RT 9W, using moving radar. The speed limit on 9W is 40, the parkway is 50, but most on the parkway seem to go from 55 to 60. The proximity of the parkway seems to be close enough that a police radar in a car on 9W could pick up a car on the parkway. A number of motorists have reported that the area gets a high number of citations as opposed to the actual number of cars using the road.Word is that they want to keep the traffic on the parkway and use this as a way of keeping RT 9W clear for residents.

Comment (3/2003): I live in Alpine and have a lot of experience with 9W and the Palisades Interstate Parkway (PIP). On 9W and the PIP the cops are always hiding in different locations, so do not expect to be safe in certain areas of these two roads. On 9W, the speed limit is 40mph; you can drive up to 50mph without getting pulled over. On the PIP, the speed limit is 50mph. You can get away with going 60 to 65mph. During some hours the average speed of motorists will be 70 to 75mph in the left lane; this is NOT okay. You WILL get pulled over for going that fast, so be careful.

Comment (4/2003): Clinton Street e/b in tenafly speed limit is 25 mph almost imposible to do going down the hill from knickerboker or 9w i have no idea where or how they catch you but your speed is radioed to a cop on the bottom of the hill

Comment (1/2004): Clinton Avenue is not where people are caught. 9W past north of Clinton all the way up to Palisades Pkwy exit 3 is where the speed traps are. I commute by 9W everyday. I just got a ticket for 67MPH in the dead of the night. I think 40MPH is way too slow for that stretch of the empty road. It must be a good source of income for the town of Alpine.

Be particularly careful on the Palisades Parkway, between exits 4 and exit 2, southbound. I rarely see speedtraps northbound, but southbound seems to have quite a few. The speedtrap areas vary, but the police tend to hide in areas where you won't see them until it's too late. Sometimes, it's in a blatant area, such as on the shoulder of the highway, but with the other cars and curve of the highway, you won't see it until it's too late. There is one area, where northbound traffic needs to make a U-turn if they want to exit off exit 3. This seems to be a favorite spot to camp and shoot radar. Again, the location is somewhat general, because the police tend to move around this general area. Slow down to about 55 mph (speed limit is 50) when you pass exit 4 and you shouldn't have a problem. Sometimes the police hide between exit 1 and exit 2, which is a decent stretch of highway, but it's less frequent than between exit 2-4. I travel this road almost daily, and this is all based upon my experience. PIP court sucks :(
