Law Enforcement (LE)- County Sheriff, Tribal Police, and State Police - are using "instant on" radar/laser technique to catch those who are traveling over the posted speed. Designed to foil radar detectors, as they get you just as your detector activates. Only way to avoid getting "catched" is to be behind a vehicle sufficient distance to catch the radar overflow as the front vehicle is "painted,' and slow down before the radar paints your vehicle. Generally, with posted speed at 70, LE will allow up to 9 MPH over, but that's not universal. Cuba and San Jsidro city LE don't usually use "instant on," but are very active in radar enforcement.

Comment (1/2005): Bernalillo Police Department are actively enforcing speed on US 550 to NM 528.

Comment (1/2006): the theory of being "painted" is not so, because modern radar is capable of "split" read on vehicles in close distances of each others, basically it can track both vehicles. the laser is more accurate because the beam is about as big as a pen. an experience cop WILL defeat your radar/laser detector. the only thing the detector is good for is to let you know you are caught! P/S: most radar detector manufactures will pay for your ticket, but read their fine print!
