Three to four police cars park just north of the Diamond Shamrock to catch people breaking the 40 mph limit on Edith. Some nights they will move approx. 2 blocks north and park facing out on dirt alcoves of the east side of the street.

The gates to Del Norte are shut and night, and the cops park in the little "cove" that is created. With all the chain link fences around, I doubt the radar guns are incredibly accurate. This probably is only run during the weekdays: on the weekends, the street is crawling with cops due to its use as a cruising street. (NOTE: Please delete the entry referring to Eldorado High School. That's the OTHER high school on Montgomery)

Not so much a speed trap as a light trap. These odd MVD traffic enforcement people jiggered the lights so someone heading northbound sits at a red for about 30 seconds while the other way is *also* red. Designed to trick people who look at the light going the other way to figure out when to go. Not sure about the frequency, but this is the worst kind of trap: one that creates a "crime" when there wasn't one before. And APD is apparently learning tricks from the state folks (do they have seminars on "Bamboozling hard-working tax-paying citizens?") as I have seen them run a "light trap" on the light going into Wilson Stadium at Manzano here in Albuquerque at least 3 times.

The APD officer park in the entranceway to Eldorado High School. The gates are shut at night, creating a little "cove" that the police can hide in. This trap probably only occurs on weekdays, because on weekends most of Montgomery is a cruising street and has cops all over the place. This speed trap occurs soon after the speed limit is lowered from 40 to 35 on Montgomery. Given that Montgomery is a major street (3 lanes each side) and that there are no curves or any other justification for speed limit lowering, this is obviously designed as a speed trap zone. They have change the speed limit on this street (down) at least once that I'm aware of. Specifically, the section from Tramway to about Wyoming used to be 45 mph, and is now 40.

The police have radar out all day and night in this area eastbound they hide out at Montezuma Elementary school in the parking lot .Westbound they are on top of a hill with radar guns drawn downhill at Carlisle and Indian school where the speed limit drops from 40 to 35 but not much notice is given. There was a notice a year ago to reduce speed around the school but it was taken down. Best way to avoid this trap is to use menaul blvd east from University Blvd to get to Carlisle the speed there is 45 mph. And also remember in NM if you have not gotten a ticket in years you are allowed to arrange a court date and there are a number of traffic attorneys in the Albuquerque phone book.

Westbound traffic is most at risk. Motorcycle officers like to stand on the corner opposite from the school. The speed limit is 35 MPH and must be followed.

APD Traffic Enforcement and municipal court judges are adhering to a strict "zero-tolerance" procedure around this area and fines are double when construction signage is present. This area is heavily manned both during AM and PM rush hours and are randomly set up around this area seven days a week. The posted speed is 30 MPH but changes frequently without warning.

Police cruise the two major highways that pass through the city in unmarked Camaros, Mustangs, and Chevy Celebraties. These cars are usually white, but there are red, gray and green units as well. The cars have no give away antannas or lights. I have often seen unsuspecting cars go flying by these units only to recognize them as police units once the dash lights come on. I-25 on the North side of town the units hide past the Paseo Del Norte Bridge. At the same location (facing north bound) I have even seen them use a Department of Highway "cherrie picker" with a cop in the air using a Laser unit and the "Ticketing /chaser" vehicles just past the bridge. Another spot is on Paseo Del Norte (major 4 lane road connecting Albuquerque and the West side of town), they will sit in the unmarked Mustangs on the Railroad tracks behind the highway barracades at a spot where the speed limit goes from 55 mph to 45 mph. Also on that same highway; west bound, they like to set up a cop on the 4th street bridge (laser)with the chase units about a 1/4 mile up on the Rio Grand crossing. One last one also on Paseo; 2nd street on ramp west bound, waiting on the on ramp as traffic comes down the overpass.

In the group of town houses along Candelaria the police have been setting up speed trap and pulling over many people. They are usually standing behind trashcans on monday, the pickup day for this area, and walk out in the street and direct people into the parking lot. I have only seen this on monday when the trash cans are out, and the patrol cars are usually parked in with the residents cars.

APD used to park along side of Coors northbound and run constant K radar beams, that were easy to detect. Now APD will sit in a field off the road just north of St Pius., and eyeball speeders before pulsing their K and Ka radar, so your radar detectors are useless. Sometimes three APD cruisers are working this detail.

APD officers sit at the bottom of the hill near Broadway. They hide behind bushes and trees, and radar your car while you go down the hill. Be carefull not to go more than 35 mph . They jump out into the street and pull you over into a residential street and give you a ticket. The same goes for Coal Ave. Going up the hill. One of the APD officers gave out so many tickets on Coal Ave. that He became famous and appeared on the evening news.

3 radio cars stopped in church parking lot near corner of Coors and Ouray, with 3 cops, each taking turns using a hand-held photo radar (not picked up by my detector like normal ABQ speedtraps). Enforcement comes as low as 5 mph over limit (which is 30 mph). Also enforcing stop signs in that area (no rolling stops allowed). Speeders are pulled over in groups, so being in the middle of a pack does not good.

Although this mile plus strech of road has been designated a work zone, and orange barrels are everywhere, there has been absolutley no construction on that strech of road in at least 2 weeks. The speed limit has been lowered from 40 to 25 and police are issuing many, many tickets everyday. Drivers beware.

On University Blvd by the airport across the street from the INS office. I have seen an officer sitting in his car in a driveway. I always see him around midnight. I have seen him so often that I wave now. University does some wierd things right there. The road basically stops at Gibson, but if you get on Yale to go to the airport and turn west on Randall(I think) that street will turn back into University after a 25mph turn. The officer sits just east of that 25mph turn, in a driveway on the north side of the street. He never has any loghts on or anything, but he is paying attention and not napping. During the day you will see the INS office building directly across the street from where he waits. He is and APD officer.

Officer stands out on street with motorcycle parked away while he shoots from his lasar gun. Speed is set at 30 but I think the residential area( before the medical clinics)has complained about speeders. Especailly TVI and UNM students catching I-25 here.
