Ridiculous speed reduction as you come into town from the south. First it drops to 45 mph in the middle of the desert, then to 25 when buildings start to appear. I came in late at night, no traffic, and as I rounded the last turn into the "downtown" there was a cop sitting in the dark. This is generally an unfriendly feeling town, with lots of cops lurking and staring, usually at the main intersection, Highway 54 and 380.

Comment (4/2004): wrong there is only one officer in the day and one at night and they stop at the Allsups for some coffee.

Comment (6/2004): This is one of the more famous speed traps in New Mexico. The speed limits and sign placements are placed for the sole purpose of issuing tickets and putting money in the town coffers. Goodness knows there is no other source of revenue in this windblown trash hole. Be VERY careful through Carrizozo!

Comment (01/2008): A crisp uniformed officer uses radar on the downside of the overpass leaving the Town. The start of the a 25 mph sign is posted and on the downsize of the overpass, a 35 mph sign is posted. Pass the second sign going 35 mph, you will be ticked for going 35 mph on the overpass. Very difficult to see officer and vehicle since he is not ivsable until you pass the 35 mph sign. Don\'t argue, take the ticked to the nearest AAA. It is know all over NM.

After making a hard right hand turn, the highway opens up to alot of nothing on either side. The posted limit is 40 mph, but the 55 mph sign is visible. The opposite side of the highway has the speed limit PAINTED ON THE HIGHWAY going into town. Seems they want you to spend money in there town one way or another before leaving.
