30 MPH speed limit extends beond the town. As you leave town on wide 4 lane, divided highway radar enforces 30 mph speed limit.

Comment (2/2003): 30 mph speed limit unrealistic on open, 4 lane, divided highway.

Comment (2/2003): Sheriff also works west of Clayton on Hwy.87, near the feed lot. Likes to park on a gravel road on the south side of 87, about a quarter of a mile off the highway.

Comment (6/2004): As A Local resident we get sick and tired of having out of state's vehicles pass us in the 30 mph zone running 40 to 60 mph. It will only take 2 or 3 minutes extra to pass Clayton at the posted speed limit. What is your Hurry?

Speed limit going into town from either direction drops from 65 to 30 rapidly and it is 30 all the way through town on their nice new concrete 4 lane. They do not work it alot unless tourist season. If it is, do not do 31mph unless you have your detector/eyeballs working overtime.

For Trucks, be careful approaching Clayton from the North. The limit drops sharply upon nearing the feed lot and before you near the rail overpass because a cow may escape and wonder onto the highway. Also the stop light at main street goes from green to red in 2 seconds. I would advise you to slow to 10 or 15 MPH because if you are heavily loaded you will not be able to stop in time even though the speed limit at that point is 30 MPH and the kindly young officer is just waiting to write you up for a stop light violation if the back door of your trailer is not clear by the time it changes to red.
