NV hwy # 95 between Tonopah & Las Vegas. Ghost town of about 100 people....two miles on each side of town the speed limit is 25 & 35 miles per hour...in the desert with no traffic. Cannot see any buildings of town because it's so far out. Ticket was $320. Deputy was extremely belligerant, nasty. Met his car going the other way in town & noticed he looked at our out of state car...apparently decided I was a good catch - two women. He had a list of other things he was going to charge me with and I, at that time, said no...I knew I had not. Ticket indicated I passed a car going 20 mph in a 35 mile zone.
Comment (10/2004): I received a ticket going 40 in a 25 mph zone.$249. fine. Going 70mph to 25mph and driving threw a ghost town with not a person a sight.A few old building, rocks and maybe a snake or two was all that is there. A speed limit of 25mph is a little slow for a dead town such as this.
Comment (6/2003): Hey! Isn't this where they filmed the 1971 movie Vanishing Point? Don't do a Kowalski and get the entire Nevada Highway Patrol chasing you all the way into California.
Comment (8/2003): 8/03 Yes, most definitely a quick drop in speed is suggested here. Police car was right along the road in sight, but I was coasting down from 55 and that wasn't fast enough for the 45-35-25 MPH signs within sight of each other. My ticket for 30 in a 25 zone came to $97. The "justice" court does not accept traffic school option. You can request a trial, but only after paying the ticket. May still try that, but in all reality, I expect the judge to be just as flexible as the officer. Just best to avoid Hwy 95 all together. Let the little Nevada residents brag about their lack of income taxes. We know where their money is coming from. It's not a male/female thing, it's just not knowing the local enforcement. We keep assuming Nevada is a suburb of California. It's not. It's the last of the old west, and best to remember that. But hey, they've got legalized cathouses here and real easy to buy guns. Is that a tradeoff?
Comment (4/2004): i didn't get a ticket there , but it's just amazing how the posted speed limit drops from 70 to 25 within sight :(
Comment (5/2004): I just received a ticket here - however, it was after I left Goldfield, where the speed limit was 70, I am quite sure I was out of Goldfield City limits. The officer said I was going 92. I in a new van, told him my speedometer said I was in the low 80s, he didn't care. He was abusive to me in front of my children and quite honestly scared me. I was going to appear on the date of the ticket, but when I called the number on the handout that accompanied the ticket I actually ended up speaking to the Judge. She told me I was "guilty" and I shouldn't show up on the date of the ticket because the officer wouldn't be there (hence they would have to dismiss the ticket by NV law), I would have to send in the full amount of the ticket and then she would set a date convenient to them. If I wanted the violation reduced I could just pay the ticket and an additional $400! Does this even seem legal? So if you get a ticket here (my first ticket ever by the way), you are just out of luck!
Comment (5/2005): It's amazing that everyone who's updating was "abused" or talked to rudely by a police officer. I've been stopped plenty of times (and sometimes ticketed) and I've never been mistreated in any way. Go figure.
