From what I can tell, the entire town of Ely is a giant speed trap - particularly east of town where locals slow down to the posted speed limit MILES before getting to town.
Comment (7/2004): Quite correct. I was nailed for "83 in a 70", where I was pretty sure I was doing at most 79, given that I was coming out of a mountain stretch, going westbound on the US50. The speed limit had just been raised from 55 to 70. A bit of talking got me written up for "78 in a 70". The cop was a fully marked SUV with top lights, and "K-9 unit" on the side, sitting on the side of the eastbound lanes and using radar. This is not far from the exit off the US50 that leads to the prison - I did see the police car as I was coming out of the turn, but thought little of it, given the previous signs for the state prison nearby, and what I had thought to be a reasonable speed (79 in a 70).
Comment (5/2005): Been there done that about 8 years ago, between Ely and McGill.Last trip on 93 coming back from Idaho last week I got one even though local was going 5+mph faster then me. Was NICE in writing me up for 80 instead of 85 in the 70. grrrrrr 77 bucks.
Comment (2/2006): Last time I drove through Ely in my pickup with California plates one of the town cops followed me the whole way through town, just waiting to pounce on me for something. Naturally I was extremely careful. Full stops and stayed below speed limits. I could see that he was getting hot under the collar. Otherwise it's a nice town and I would have been happy to stop and spend a little money. But not in traffic court, thanks!
