Travelling thru as a tourist, south on the 95 around Walker Lake. Posted was 60 MPH, but changed to 50 MPH near a restaurant/motel/store (not sure). Was admiring the Lake and did not see change in limit. H. Patrol sitting on side, facing South, up a dirt ramp with radar. Clocked me at 65, cited me for 60 in a 50.
Comment (10/2004): Also watch out on the other side of Hawthorne. The speed limit goes from 65-55-45-35-25 all within about 500 feet! I actually took a picture of these speed limit signs that are only about 70 feet or so apart! I have been popped in this area before, it's just about impossible to slow down that fast.
Comment (4/2005): Hawthorne (Walker Lake) is in the middle of nowhere, and I found that the HP went back and forth all day long on US 95, looking for speeders. One time, I left town just in front of a cruiser, and he tailed me for 10 miles. Then turned around. Nothing else to do, I guess.... Pull off into downtown Hawthorne, and the radar Sheriff is waiting for you, too. 25 MPH downtown. I commented on this to a store clerk there-and he just laughed.
Comment (4/2005): If you take the Truck route that goes around the outside of town the speed limit is only 35. The best part is the hwy patrol will follow you thru 2 to 3 speed zones and then pull you over trying to site you for breaking the speed limit in all of them!
Comment (2/2006): I observed a lot of enforcement activity in Hawthorne. Apparently the military base there and the legal brothels attract hotshots in fast cars, and the town appreciates the extra revenue.
Comment (4/2006): I was caught in a speed trap 35miles north of Hawthorne. The Tribal Police consider these speed traps a method of producing revenue, they are all over the Paiute Territory, from Pyramid Lake to North of Las Vegas the Indian Tribe has speed limit variations through towns that are hard to follow including one that is 30ft appart from 45 to 30 near Hawthorne. The Tribe has little revenue and I understand their issues but I think that they should welcome visitors rather than trick them into tickets. I will never drive through that area again.
