Between mile markers 375 and 378, the east and westbnd lanes of I-80 split far apart to accomodate the route over the pass through a narrow canyon. As you move up in elevation, the landscape changes from open range/brush to pinions and junipers. The NHP uses well-concealed service roads in the wide median to check speeds. Have seen as many as 3 cars in there at once. Same thing occurs at Silver Zone pass to the east around mile markers 389 to about 392, to a lesser degree. Take your detector warnings very seriously out here, I had 7 miles of warning. To be fair, I've always found NHP to be quite reasonable.
Comment (7/2002): I got a ticket in this same spot in 1993. NHP was good to me also. I was going about 115mph and was ticketed for only 75mph. ( the limit was 65mph back then)
Comment (10/2002): I got a ticket going over 90 mph when I STARTED passing a truck. Trooper gave me a ticket for 80 in a 75. I didn't mean to be speeding just had been 4 wheeling all weekend and didn't think my car would go 100 mph! He was very nice and said he's hard-nosed and would give me a ticket regardless. Tickets in Nevada are $400 or more for speeding 10 mph or over!
Comment (9/2003): I just received a ticket for going 104 in a 75 mph area. I was about 5 - 10 miles west of West Wendover, NV heading east. I took my seat belt off to get out of my car as the officer approached. He was mad because I did that. He wanted to make sure I was driving with it off. I couldn't find my insurance information because I can't reach over to my glove compartment since I have a very disabled sholder from being WIA. He didn't ticket me for that. If I thought he would I would have gotten out of the my car and walked over the passanger seat to look. My wife has Alzheimer's and could not understand what to look for. I do not believe I was going that fast. My wife would read every sign that gave the speed limit and then check to see how fast I was driving. The road was wide open and little traffic. On the way back to San Francisco I was very careful not to speed and kept it as close to 75 as I could. Then I got pulled over again because, as the officer said, the posted speed was reduced to 65. I couldn't confirm that posting without driving 25 miles ahead to the offramp and returning to the sign. That is at least 50 miles of driving to check.
