NHP uses elko for training for the north east part of the state. The speed limit drops to 65 Mph through elko on I-80 and there is usually an NHP officer out on just that stretch all the time. Idaho street in the city of elko changes from 35 to 25 so many times it's not funny. It is a major revenue maker for the city. Just drive the whole thing 25, or one of the sneaky signs will get you.

Comment (5/2003): This must be a great source of revenue, after receiveing my ticket on 5/24/03, i looked back in rear view mirror, and the officer was stopping another car. I never saw the 65 mph signs. My fine was $50 and the ticket was written not a moving violation. I would like the speed reduction signs more visable.

Comment (6/2003): I got a $90 ticket today for 80 in a 75 three miles east of Elko on I80. NHP says I was clocked from the air at 84 but he would right up only eighty. I ask for a warning since I haven't had a ticket in over 20 years, but the cop said he had to write me up. Traffic was sparse. This is a total revenue genreation scheme. Stay at the posted limited when in the 10 mile radius of Elko.

Comment (10/2003): Numerous NHP between Wells and Elko,Driving between Twin Falls Id.(US 93) and Reno (I 80) had numerous close calls with dark blue NHP pick-up trucks that have shells that are slightly higher than the roof-line of the truck making the very low profile light bars almost impossible to see.

Comment (5/2004): Mine was $150 (+2 pts California) for 82 in a 75, I80. Beware the bridges: from above, sight you on one side, snag you on the other.

Comment (6/2004): I have not got a ticket yet, but I am a pizza delivery driver and I use the highway a lot and I almost always see a highway patrolman between the east Elko turnoff (303) and the downtown Elko turnoff (301). They are usually at the first bridge going east after the downtown turnoff (second bridge going west after the East Elko turn off). It is not uncommon for more than one to stop and visit at this place looking for speeders.

From the exits East Elko (303) to West Elko (298) there is almost always a highway patrol car. The speed limit goes down to 65 from 75, and the way the land is people who are crossing the state don't see the patrol car until it is to late.
