Reliable accounts of 2 middle-age men pulled over in same area on same weekend. Both knew the troopers sometimes haunt that stretch and so were alert, watching front and rear on open, lightly travelled stretch in sunny conditions--one using a Whistler detector. Neither can explain where the troopers came from or how they clocked speed. One had been following 1/2 mile behind a trooper at 55 for 2 miles when another tore up behind him and pulled him over, said he'd clocked him doing 73 up a hill. But victim said he never had a black car behind him in 10 miles. Inexplicable.
Comment (11/2002): The previous poster is absolutely right. There are several pockets of speed limit enforcement along all of the Taconic, but especially near Ancram, Chatham, Pine Plains, and the entrance to the Lake Tagkhanic State Park, where the speed limit is enforced by the Park Patrol! I wouldn't even push 65 if I were you...61 is about the best you can hope to do and not get nailed.
Comment (7/2002): Nowhere in NY State will you find teh level of speed enforcment as you do anywhere on the Taconic Parkway. This has been true for the 40 years I have driving in NY. Posted at 55, today's average actual traffic speed ranges 55 to 70, the numbers going higher as you near NYC. Go with the flow or keep it under 65 if the flow is slower.
Comment (6/2003): I have been traveling the Taconic Parkway since 1972 and I have seen some of the most horrific accident scene's as a Firefighter. It is no wonder that Troop K is hot about keeping the speed down. WATCH OUT FOR DEER!
Comment (6/2003): Especially watch the Stamford area of the Taconic. Multiple bogies spaced couple miles apart.
Comment (7/2003): I used to do albany - nyc in 2 hours, door to door, via the taconic and didn't get nailed once. i must have been really lucky.
