Heading out of town toward Alfred & Almond there is a very long 35, then 45, zone. The school playing fields are to your right. It is worse coming the other way because it is downhill and almost impossible to keep it down to the posted speed.

Comment (5/2006): I disagree with this being a "trap" area. Police presence is minimal in Andover. THe posted limit does reduce as stated a long way out which allows for braking distance. The speed limit is 35, which is not unusual considering most villages are 30 mph and this area is near a school. If you're driving South on Rt 21 from Alfred there is also a traffic light and 4 was intersection to contend with. You can't really have traffic entering the village at 55 or greater, seeing school kids chasing a ball in the road then slammming on the brakes for a possible red light.

Comment (7/2006): The limits are now 30 and 40. One has the 40MPH sign immediately in front of where they choose to enforce the 30MPH. The enforcement activity appears to be revenue (quota?) driven not safety driven. We will avoid visiting or doing business with this village after experiencing their unfair enforcement practices.

Comment (7/2006): All of the local and nearby villagers recognise this as a trap and call it exactly that. It snares the most law abiding drivers. If is were not meant to be a trap, the signage would be differently spaced.

Comment (7/2006): The village of Andover near Main St DOES have a speed trap. The 30 MPH and the 40 MPH are very close together. This is dreadful, I had a family member who was very upset while visiting Andover. They received a citation that has ruined their vacation. The village will lose tourists because of this speed trap.

Enforcement is made with higher speed limit clearly visible on way out of town headed North. Immediately in front of line of vision, one can see 40MPH just ahead (about 50 yards). They choose this point just before the 40MPH sign to enforce 30MPH which is in effect in the village proper. Upon leaving the village,it is a rural area in the countryside area. Enforcement personnel are courteous almost to the point of embarrassment. One leaves knowing revenue (and quotas?) are the issue not safety!
