City of Asher (pop 450) has found a new revenue for its city coffers: a speed trap on HW 177. Speed limit drops quickly from 65 to 45, so watch the signs closely.

Comment (12/2002): north of asher on 177 coming into town the speed drops from 65 to 45 in just 2 tneths of a mile you will be coming up a hill see a sign that saye reduced speed go on over the hill you see a sign that says 65 just behind that 55 and then 45 the cops are locking you in at the 65 mph zone and stopping you in the 55 or 45 mph zone

Comment (12/2002): Asher is a speed trap from the south and north on 177. There is most always an officer stationed somewhere along the route through town ready to pounce on anyone who enters and has not yet slowed to the 40 m.p.h. signs that come upon you all of a sudden. Their town's main source, possibly only source,of revenue is from this "speed trap". Be forewarned that you must creep through this community to elude a fine. Seems as though the $500.00 to $600.00 per capita fine of this town should go toward these per capita residents. Then the citizens might put a stop to this money making nonsense that the civic electors are collecting.

Comment (12/2002): This is one of the most active areas I have seen in the state. I know about the drop in speed limit, but it is easy to overlook with knowledge the speed trap is there. If the law is present someone usually gets pulled over. I don't know if all get tickets.

Comment (12/2002): I was told by the officer to go to court and the Judge may reduce my ticket of doing 51 in a 40 to below ten miles over (I thought I was out of town when I got the ticket). The town of Asher isn't even located on 177, its back over on another rode. I drove down from Edmond to go to court because I didn't want it on my record. I never saw so many people for traffic court. I had the smallest fine which was $125. There were at least 60 people and no body was getting off. The Judge just listened to my excuse reduced the speed but not the cost and sent me off to the clerk to pay my money all within 30 seconds. Thats $7500 plus for that month, and they say they don't use speeders as revenue.

Comment (12/2002): I've noticed that when you go through this town you don't even have to speed and you can get a speeding ticket. I was going about 45-47 when I was in the 50mph zone and I got a ticket for going over 60mph. then about a month later I was with a friend and she was driving but, I had warned her about the speed trap so we were both watching her speed and we still got pulled over and got a speeding ticket. needless to say, I do not go through there anymore. I suggest that if you have to go through this town bring some fresh baked brownies to give the cop when he pulls you over and maybe it will put him in a better mood when he is deciding how fast he is going to say you were going

Comment (12/2002): When I went with my mother to Ashers "court" for her speeding ticket, not only was the officers rude and treated everyone there like children, we waited over three hours for her name to be called and several times were told "Do not even think about telling the judge you think it was a speed trap". Another thing was after sitting there for that long and talking to the others waiting, more then 75% were from out of the area and not "good buddies" or neighbors of any of the officers.

Comment (1/2003): I was one of those out of towners who was stopped in. When the lights went on I was going 47 in a 50 mph zone. My son and I were appalled that we were stopped. Actually, he said we were going 68 in a 55. Just not true. But how do you fight a town where this is there source of revenue, and the chief of police is a lonely civil servant who is not to proud to tell you that, "I've even given my wife a ticket."

Comment (9/2002): Just East of the four way intersection of 3W and Hwy 39 the speed limit is 40. You'll think you're heading out of town when you start going down a hill. There will be a cop sitting right by the 40 MPH sign with his radar gun stuck out the window. Locals there say that the cops stop every out-of-towner and give them a ticket.

Comment (1/2003): Like all the others, I too got caught in Asher's speed trap. If you are reading this and about to go to court, plead not-guilty. You have to pay the fine and then your case gets sent to county court. At county court it is usually thrown out and your money re-imbursed. Asher is one of the communities under state investigation right now for abuse of power. It may be only a matter of time before they lose their "priviledge" to write tickets. This is one of the worst speed trap communities in our area!

Comment (2/2003): People may believe this town is a speed trap, but the speed limit signs are spaced the legal distance apart and the speeds to which you are to slow down are also within the legal speeds so that you don't just have to throw on the brakes. They both follow the Oklahoma State requirements. All I can tell the people traveling through this town is if you wouldn't speed, you would not get a ticket. I have lived in Asher for many years and I can not tell you how many times I have witnessed someone flying through the intersection of Hwy 177 and Hwy 39 without even applying their brakes. I have also seen many people going so fast on 177 in front of the convience stores, that if they ever hit someone, it would probably knock them into the next county. So just don't speed and you won't get a ticket.

Comment (2/2003): If there is a school event that you must drive thru Asher then watch out!!It looks like a circus with all the lights flashing from the police cars picking up people.

Comment (2/2003): You want to know how to fix the problem.........DON'T SPEED!

Comment (2/2003): I think all of this nonsense about speedtraps is a sad statement about today's society. A speed limit sign or a stop sign is a law. If you roll through a stop sign or travel over the speed limit, you deserve a ticket. I travel through Asher all of the time on my way to Norman or OKC. Guess how many tickets I have received? You guessed it, none. I know this town aggressively patrols and enforces it's laws, so I am especially attentive when I pass through. All of you complainers should take a class on responsibility and respect. Everyone thinks laws are for everyone but them because their reason for breaking the law is "different" and they are justified in what they were doing. Grow up. It is time we stop blaming others for our own ignorance. If you don't speed you won't contribute to their town's wealth.

Comment (2/2003): I have lived in Asher for Three years. moved down here from Oklahoma City. and I do not believe that Asher is a Speed Trap. There are two main Highways that run through Asher. And i have seen many peole run the four way stop. So ask yourself. What would it be like if there were a lazy cop who didn't do his job? Maybe one of your family members would be hit by another car or worse killed. I believe that are Chief of Poilce is just doing his job. and I dont understand how you can call it a speed trap when the speed limit is post in plain site on oth Highways? The speed limit does not drop from 65 to 40 like you have said. It goes from 65 to 55 to 50 to 40. I do not think there is aything wrong with the speed limit. I just think all of you are upset because you started to speed up to be on your way before you could. and if that is what you did then you needed a ticket. If you can not understand that the Asher cop is just doing his job, then you can just go around Asher. and in closing I will say this if you get caught speeding then you need a ticket no matter what town or state you are in. Me myself have been pulled over in Asher by the cop and he gave me a ticket. I was ding 50 in a 40. Did I grip or Complain. No because that is his job. I paid the ticket and got over it.

Comment (01/2008): I think the speed traps have been fixed. The speed limit signs seem a little more normal now. I had lots of friends warn me but still it sneeks up on you. There used to be a sign that someone put on a piece of plywood that said speed trap ahead. I never got a ticket there but all the locals I knew called it a speed trap.

Comment (02/2008): I was recently traveling on State HWY 18 (old HWY 177) into the town of Asher. At no point between Romulus OK, and Asher OK are there speed limit signs reflecting the speed limit on this road. Please note that unless otherwise posted all county roads in OK are 35 mph (I learned this after receiving my ticket). It is quite funny that the current drivers ed manual for Oklahoma reflects that all county roads are 55 mph. I was doing 54 mph, and came into the outskirts of Asher were the first speed limit sign I encountered was a 25mph. Needless to say the officer issued me a nice ticket for doing 54mph in a 25 mph zone. No reduce speed ahead sign, speed zone ahead, etc. here before hitting the first 25mph. If this isn\'t a speed trap I don\'t know what is....

Speed signs of 55 and 40 are close together with the 40 mph sign just before you top a hill. The officer sits on the down hill side on the left.

Two police officers patrol the highway, usually on Hwy 177. The town supposedky has 419 residents according to the last census. Patrolling occurs within a mile north and south of the intersection. Multiple tickets are possible if they can catch someone speeding and possibly not coming to a full stop or going slightly past the stop sign before stopping.

Asher is only a few blocks long and the police officer sits on the south side of town and on the west side of the road. He will stop you (as he did me) for speeding even if you are NOT speeding. I work for law enforcement and couldn't believe this city would stoop to giving false tickets. I was actually on my way to work at the time and my "officers" couldn't believe he would do this.

If you go only one mile ove speed limit, watch out. A lot of people here call it the boss hog community of our neck of the woods.
