This is the only income Big Cabin has,( I lived there). The Town is 2 miles away and has a 65 zone. The only place he works is the stretch at the Turnpike and truck stop gates. He would ticket his own mother. But as posted earlier he loves Texans.

Comment (12/2002): Another Texan w/a ticket... is 45 mph posted as you turn off turpike going south bound? I didnt see it, but did see the officer.was watching my speed as i hit the top of the hill after truck stop whre it is posted 55. Officer was very polite as he told me i was doing 58 in 45... mmmm.was he picking up northbound vehicles coming over the hill.I think so. Just liked my Texas tags i guess

Comment (12/2002): The city of Big Cabin now has two full time and one part time policean has purchaised 3 NEW vehicles, including a SUV. They are talking about buying a drug dog and building a holding jail. They have bought health insurance and retirement plans for city employees. The community does not even have a school. The local truck stop is the primary source of employment for the community locally. All of this is from the new found revenue of traffic tickets. The 2 mile stretch of Hwy 69 drops to 35miles/hr abruptly with poorly marked speed limits proxysmal to the Will Rogers Turnpike and Hwy 69 intersection.

Comment (1/2003): Hey, you all need to lay off of the Big Cabin Cops. If you all would go the speed limit we would have all the speeding. You all are just made because you got caught.

Comment (1/2003): I have lived in this area for over 20 years and for people to say that Big Cabins sole source of revenue is speeding tickets is assinine! And only shows thier stupidity, Big Cabin annexed the 2 mile stretch of hwy 69 in order to provide one of Oklahomas biggest Truck Stops city maintained sewer and water. The revenue generated from the Truck Plaza alone is twice that of tickets. Also, for all you would be lawyers out there, HWY 69 is a STATE HWY, meaning that the state decides and sets the speed limits, not the Big Cabin police force. I have never been ticketed there in over 20 years af traveling that stretch of road. Hwy 69 is a proven drug trafficing route and I for one am glad to see it being patroled. Speed limits are there to help reduce the chances of fatality accidents, and in the pat 2 years there have not been any fatality accidents there. Obey the law and you wont have to worry about "speed traps"

Comment (1/2003): Well it seems to be public knowledge now. The figures were published in the local paper. The police admitted to writing an average of $15,000.00 dollars worth of tickets a month. Thats $180,000.00 dollars worth annually for a community of 300 people. May not be the only source of revenue for Big Cabin but it must beat the heck out of paying the taxes necessary to support such a big police department. When traveling thru Big Cabin, Oklahoma, be careful, be very careful.

Comment (2/2003): US Highway 69 is NOT a state highway...it is a US Highway. The speedlimits from the I44 overpass to the I44 gate are not set by the state of Oklahoma since they are within the town limits of Big Cabin. They are set by the Town (i.e. the Police department) Hopefully the state investigation will show Big Cabin to be what everyone else already knows it is...a bonafide SPEEDTRAP!

Comment (2/2003): I am proud of our police force. They do write alot of tickets at latest count the avg. ticket written was for 16.7 mph over the posted limit. If you are going that fast you are just not paying attention.

Comment (3/2003): I have lived in the Big Cabin area for over 20 years and I am thankful for the local police there! They not only travel the highways they also travel the back roads around Big Cabin. I have seen a numerous accidents there at the Truck stop due to speeding and etc. So for one I am glad to see the speed limits posted. I travel that road twice a day and from the south the limits are posted on both sides of the road going from 65 - 55 - 45- 35 and even with the posted signs and the red light that has been installed there at the turnpike exit there was still an accident caused by a car traveling to fast, ran a red light and hit a big trailer rig coming off the turnpike on a green light. There has been to many accidents there over the years some fatal so all I can say is Keep up the good job Big Cabin Police and Highway Patrol!

Comment (3/2003): I dodged a careless driver inside of the truck stop parking lot, never going over 10 mph. The posi trac on my 65 vette caused the tires to make a light squeal. The Big Cabin police officer flashed his lights and I stopped after getting out of the way of a big buick heading for me. The officer directed me out of the lot and onto the state highway shoulder and gave me a ticket for careless driving. Even though the charge was dismissed, I paid $80 in court costs. BTW there were a number of folks in line for traffic court that day. Seemed over zealous to me. I am 53 and not interested in hot rodding my vette in a parking lot full of trucks.

Comment (3/2003): 3/03I also was nabbed by the friendly officer of Big Cabin. I was too busy looking for the entrance to I-44 as I was moving north on 69 to watch for him also. I obviously didn't think I was moving excessively or endangering any other traffic. But he said I was doing 62 in a 45 zone,so there you are. This is my 2nd traffic ticket in over 50 years of driving,so I'm not a chronic speeder!!Over the years I've seen more and more communities lured by the big money they see can be made on traffic tickets. They look at the roadways in their communities and figure out the best locations to set up their hiding places. The person who stated he has been driving in BC for 20 years and never received a ticket no doubt knows where to watch for the police, as I do in my community. But,the locals love it as it provides dollars they don't have to come up with.It is hard for me to believe an officer, who is supposed to be of high moral character can purposefully hide himself to make momey. I would think he would better use his time being seen on the roadway( notice how a moving police car slows down traffic) rather than hiding.Or, the city buying one of those signs that indicate how fast your going and placing that in a congested area. But that would cost money, not make momey!

Comment (6/2003): It was appoximately 5:30PM I got stopped here. I Didn't realize I was exceeding the speed limit. We were on our way to visit my Wife's Parents for Father's Day. I decided to come back to the scene on the way back and retrace my steps. Going Northbound the speed is 55 on one side of the I-44 bridge and 45 on the otherside. Definitely a speed trap. If they were concerned about accidents they would post dangerous intersection signs and flashing caution lights. Guess what at 10:00 PM when I returned to the scene he had two cars pulled over.

Comment (7/2003): Traveling through at about 12:30 am one morning and seen one of these guys sitting on the side of the road. Since I have lived around the area for over 30 years. I am well aware of them being there more often then not. I always Travel through the area at least a few miles an hour under the speed limit. I was stopped. Almost got cited!

As you top the hill you are in a 65mph and then you see the 45mph, but not in time to slow down to 45. It seemed while I sat there with 3 kids witnessing the event that only my TX car was pulled over despite all the OK cars that also passed the 2nd car doing speed trap enforcement.

A speed trap in every sense of the word. I've talked with some of the natives. Its a rural community of about 300 people with a Police Force of four police officers, three police cars and a drug dog. If you have Texas car tags or hispanic features, your chances of being stopped are greater I believe. How can a rural community of 300 people afford four police officers, three police cars and a drug dog? It must be supported by speeding tickets. Follow the truckers who now bypass Big Cabin by using highways 82 and 28 through Langley, Ok.

Big Cabin police sit on the north side of a big overpass. When you drive over this overpass, the speed limit drops from 65 m.p.h. to 30 m.p.h.The police mess with anybody. I am a mechanic who works right there and can see them pull over anybody from an 18 wheeler to an old person going to slow.

There are two ways you are caught in a trap. First of all, coming into town from the south headed north you will be in a 65 mph zone. You will top a hill and "boom" the speed limit is 45 mph. Secondly, the speed limit on the turnpike is 75 mph. When you exit the turnpike onto highway 69 "boom" the speed limit is 45 mph. Granted the speed limits are posted you have to look for them very closely or you too will get a ticket. Mine was $110 for going 56 in a 45.
