Police are checking for out of state cars. Stop cars even doing the speed limit and then state they were speeding. Example driver go speed limit of 70 and local police issue ticket for 85 mile an hour. Your word against his.
Comment (11/2002): 11/10/02 Sunday afternoon southbound I got nailed for 80 in a 70 zone. xxxxxx was in a brand new Crown Vic cruiser my Escort never made a sound, I guess they bought a new laser gun with the funds they are bringing in.
Comment (12/2002): What is a radar detector for? To let you know that an officer has a radar unit on and that you need to slow down. For all of the people complaining about the court system in this town, you all have the right of appeal if you are not satisfied with the municipal judge's decision.
Comment (10/2002): The little town of Caney, population 105, is a laugh. Three years ago they got one of Clintons put a hundred thousand cops of the street grants, bought an exstate troopers car, hired one cop. This cop jumped out in the mediun of Highway 69/75 and you guessed it. Business was so good they bought another ex troppers car and hired two more cops. In this speed trap today they have three new patrol cars, bought from the money callected from this speed trap and a speed trap it is. This portion of highway is nothing but barb wire fences and 70 MPH zone. As you are passing through you cannot see the city of Caney. I have been fighting the speedtraps in Kiowa, Stringtown, Atoka, Tushka, Caney and Caddo, all on Highway 69/75. So far not much progress has been made, but time will tell, JUST BE CAREFUL.
Comment (2/2003): 80 in a 70 is 10 mph too fast. Slow down!! Don't give the officers the chance to pull you over...obey the speed limits.
Comment (3/2003): I just discovered this Internet site, and have never posted on here, but would urge you to be careful in Caney. Had I known I was actually in a town, I would have slowed down anyway! I was barely speeding when the policemen pulled me over, I have never been pulled over before and I thought I had a tail light out or something. I was driving 2 miles over the limit, driving 72 in a 70, However he said he clocked me at travelling 82 in a 70 at night. However, my cruise control had been set on a steady 72 for miles. I forgot to check my new GPS at the time, and when I later checked it, it confirmed my average speed during that one minute, was "71.7" which was the exact same speed over the previous 5 miles or so. However the officer was nice, and wrote me a warning, probably becuase I have zero tickets in 16 years of driving... Be careful here. I am an out of state driver if that had anything to do with it. I'm guessing their radars are calibrated high or are using them improperly if they cited me for driving 10.3 mph faster than my GPS indicates!
Comment (5/2003): Law enforcement...especially the OHP...leave their radars in suspension. They can get your speed and lock it into place before your radar detector even picks it up. This is why I don't even bother buying a radar detector.
Comment (7/2003): I am a Deputy Sheriff in Texas, and was on vacation in Missouri in June of 2003. My girlfriend was with me, and we cut through to Tulsa to visit my aunt on the way home to Texas. My girlfriend was driving when we happened upon this Speedtrap in Caney. She was in my Z28 Camaro, and was speeding. We had passed through the other towns mentioned in this, and saw the city limit signs, and slowed to the speed limit. There is no city limit sign in Caney, just some little sign in the median that says simply, Caney. There was nothing but barbed wire and fields in this town. The officer did not offer any sympathy and wrote a $92.00 ticket, which is alot cheaper than the tickets I dish out for the same speed. The problem is that a town like this with a population number a bit over 100 should not need 3 police officers. The county Sheriff should handle any calls for service in this community. The state legislature in Texas in 1995 passed a law that virtually eliminated small town speed traps by suffocating their speed limit incomes. The law states that a town in Texas with a population of less than 5,000 persons shall not be able to keep any traffic fine revenues that exceed 30% of their annual budget. So basically, this shut down most of the " speed trap " police departments whose only use was to generate a fat paycheck for the city coffers. These Police departments either shut down, or reduced their staff and equipment. It seems that Oklahoma does not have a law like this, because there is NO USE for 3 police officers for a town of 100 people. I doubt they ever have any calls. The main reason for traffic law enforcement is safety. I doubt traveling at 12 miles over the limit on a wide open highway during a clear day, with no other traffic on the roadway poses a threat to the citizens of this town. I do not condone speeding, as I work traffic enforcement myself, but I know a speed trap when I see one, and this is a bad one.
Comment (1/2004): Oklahoma does have an OKLAHOMA SPEED TRAP LAW.. TITLE 47.. search for Okla Statutes Section 11-811 of Title 47. It has a 30% limit on revenue for these little non existent towns located out of sight from the traveling public. It is for the MONEY. Near as I could tell complaints go to the Hiway Commissioner or Hiway Patrol Commissioner. I have been lucky so far because they have been working other victims. I run the speed limit but have seen numerous occasions of cars being stopped for now reason.
Comment (1/2004): i think caney needs to spend more time patrolling the inside of city limits instead of sitting in the median waiting to nail someone from out of state for a window tint violation. like the windshield strip being one inch lower the legal limit. nick-picking.
Comment (12/2003): I grew up in the town of Caney. When I was in High school there was Multiple fatality accidents in what in now the Caney city limits. Since the police department and Speed trap went into enforcement a few years back people living in the city of Caney can actually sleep. There is no more kids doing donuts on the highway or the city streets at all hours of the night. I know this for a fact because I was one of the worst. We know go out of Caney to cause all of our trouble. The Chance of getting caught by a Atoka county Deputy is not going to Happen and if we do he's probably related to someone I'm With anyhow

This is a few miles north of the Bryan/Atoka County line in SE OK. Town is unseen from the highway and local cop clocks cars in the 70mph highway zone, with only a 5mph zone. The only warning northbound is a handpainted sign on a tree just south of town that warns "Speed trap ahead." It is a construction zone now with temp speed limit of 55, BEWARE!

Caney has had their authority to enforce traffic laws revoked by the State as reported today (12/29/06) by the Tulsa World. Caney officials expressed worry about the safety of residents and ***"the financial future of the town"*** Of course, they never expressed any such concern with the financial well-being of motorists caught in their trap.
