Altus Police are notorious for stopping people becasue they can. the local judicial system supports the police right or wrong. Several police officers have stated that they stop cars for bogus reasons, I.E. driving over the line, not using turn signals, weaving. etc. Avoid Altus especially during the night on weekends.

Comment (6/2006): i lived in Altus for several years. never got a ticket or saw evidence of a trap.

Comment (12/2006): those aren't bogus reasons all of the ones you used as a example are against the law. if you're not doing any thing wrong you don't have to worry about being stopped.

Comment (11/2006): I lived in Altus for 7 years and never experienced any problems nor ever received any tickets. This is the first I have heard of this Altus speed trap.

Comment (12/2006): Weaving in the road and driving over the line is bogus? I've never seen any evidence of speed traps either.

Comment (12/2006): I just have to say that the listed IE bogus reasons are acutally violations of the law stated in Oklahoma Statutes of Title 47. I have lived there all my life and have never once been stopped for a "Bogus Reason".

Comment (12/2006): It is only the individuals who get stopped breaking the law that complain about this. They don't understand that the police are just doing their job.

Comment (12/2006): I am an Altus Police Officer. The "bogus" reasons listed are, in fact, traffic violations under Oklahoma law. If you commit a traffic violation like those listed you can expect to be stopped. We have no "speed traps". We do have motivated, fair police officers who do aggressively work traffic.

Comment (12/2006): Uh....weaving and driving over the line is a bogus reason to stop someone now? And last time I checked, it is against traffic law to fail to signal your turn.

Comment (12/2006): I'm in the military in Altus. If you are not a local then you are fresh bait. Two tickets in one day. First ticket for Improper lane change. The officer said I changed lanes improperly then accused me of smaking pot or was drunk. After there field test I was let go with a ticket. Later that same day, ticket for careless driving. I went around a car that was turning into a parking lot on a 4 lane road. No idea what I did wrong? Beware and avoid at all cost.
