At the west edge of town the speed limit goes from 35 to 45 in little more than a block or two. The city policeman waits until you reach the 45 mile speed limit and starts to chase you if you exceeded 35 in the short distance between the two signs. At times he has clocked the speed when he is chasing you. The street was totally deserted on a small town Saturday night. The ticket (72.00) was not contested because we lived too far away.

Comment (12/2002): I was not only pulled over, but treated like trash. For having a tail light out, and speeding. This guy was just wrong, luckly I didn't get a ticket.

Comment (12/2002): while driving in canton i entered town from the east at about 10 pm and the officer was doing his job working radar to make the street's safer for all in the town so give them a break and do the speed that is posted and you will not have anything to worry about so let him do his job it is a speed limit so if he want's to by state law he could stop you for going 1mph over the limit

Comment (1/2003): I don't expect my tax dollars to be used by some police officer who wants to pull someone over for going 1-5 mph over the speedlimit, unless it is through a school zone, & the general public would agree with me.

Comment (5/2003): I am the general public and I disagree. The speed limit is the speed limit. It does not say speed limit +5.

Comment (5/2003): Last comment is dead-on. If the speed limit says 70, then go 70. No mystery there. The truth is that the majority of the public does go the speed limit. If you don't want to believe my definition of speed limit, go find your Webster's Dictionary (that's a book that tells you what words mean) and look up the definition of "limit," Mr. Self-rightous my tax dollars don't pay for... Furthermore, Mr. my tax dollars don't pay for, I didn't see you state that you were cited for speeding 1-5 over the limit. Perhaps the next guy he stopped for doing what your tax dollars don't pay for was drunk and was taken to jail, and maybe that saved your life. Hard to believe that other, indeed more serious violations can be discovered by lawfully stopping drivers who are violating the law. The only reason that you have a problem with it is because of your disgusting self-rightous attitude and maybe you should receive professional counseling for your problem.

Comment (08/2008): On state highway 51, beginning approximately one mile west of Canton, Oklahoma, speed reduces from 55mph to 45mph to 35mph very quickly around a curve. City police clocked us at 47 mph at the beginning of the 35 mph zone. The ticket was reduced to $95 from $175 so as not to be reported to our insurance company, which was at least considerate of the policeman, but still exorbitant. We will not contest the ticket because we live too far away to appear in court.
