Being from Texas and having relatives living in Atoka County, I have traveled US 69/75 and SH 3 towards the Farris area many times. There have been many times that I have seen people pulled over on the side of the road, wether it be local cops or the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. Most recently, I had just gotten on SH 3 in the Farris area and I had set the cruise to 75, even though the posted speed limit was 65. I didn't feel there was any danger, since there were few cars on the road. No sooner did I set the cruise control, I saw a Highway Patrol car pass me going eastbound while I was heading westbound towards Atoka. I did not see him until it was too late since he was behind another car, which was behind a big rig. At first, I thought I was okay, since he did not turn around right away, but then he turned around and turned his lights on and caught up with me. Thankfully, he let me off with a warning. My advice: once you enter Atoka County, you better watch yourself. You never know when they are gonna pounce.

Comment (2/2004): I lived in Atoka County for years and seem the Highway Patrol, City, County stopping people. I found that if you drive with in 5 miles of the speed limit you don`t have a thing to worry about, but if you are star wishing and run out of a 70 mph into a 55 mph they have you nailed to the wall. My advice to you is to watch your speed from the red river to Mc Alester.

Comment (4/2004): Atoka has had a speed trap for years. At one time they surpassed Ardmore, McAlester,Ada and Durant combined. They have extended the city limits north to the North Boggy bridge 5 miles. Stringtown caught on many years ago and were making so much money, they bought 5 new buicks, built a city hall and this is a town with 1 store on hwy 69. They award their officers for tickets. Savanna and Kiowa to the north have caught on and have extended their city limits for miles. To the south it is Tushka and Caddo and Caney. You better watch these rednecks they are jealous of our jobs and they want our money. I have met people from Boston, New York, Minnisota, Illinois. When I first went to Dallas everyone at work gave me a lot of misery when they found out where I was From.

Comment (6/2004): US 69/75 Just South of Tushka heading for Atoka, watch on the right side of the road, just across the fence, for a hand lettered sign that says "SPEED TRAP AHEAD". Heed that sign.

Comment (7/2004): used to live down in Atoka, family still down there. that whole area is one big "Dukes of Hazzard" speed trap. As soon as you cross the Red River, shut it down and don't open it back up until you get north of Eufaula. either that, or detour over to us271 in Paris Texas and just follow it until it becomes Indian Nation Turnpike at least that way you only deal with Highway patrol. it just doesn't look right for towns that have a combined population of less than 10k people to extend their city limits out so far just to bring in the extra revenue.

Comment (1/2005): I got some bad advice from my aunt. She said to take the Big Cabin cut off to go to Dallas from Illinois. I drive a Supra turbo! I saw all the warnings about speed traps and did fine until it got dark(never been this way before) and missed a speed limit sign. I can see why since there must 100 changes in speed on this stretch of highway. I am a 32 year veteran of IDOT as an Engineer and I know a little bit about speed limits. All have to say is that Oklahoma DOT is just setting people up to fail. By the way is it illegal in Oklahoma to use a radar device within 55 feet of a change in speeds? My advice to anybody going to dallas is not to go this way or stay out of Oklahoma.!
