Carlton Oregon has several sections of "two lane" with different posted speeds for opposite directions on the same section of road. The hope is you will either be confused or disregard this obviously worthless rule. And they are waiting.
Comment (06/2008): The Carlton businesses should not be punished for your inability to drive the speed limit. The officer\'s are just trying to keep us law abiding, speed limit following people safe from people like you. There is no such thing as a \"speed trap\". Just because people get pulled over a lot in a spot or that officers make a lot of traffic stops in an are does not make a place a speed trap. It\'s not like there is much crime in a small town like Carlton, so doing justified traffic stops is a must, otherwise what would they do all day?!

City speed limit sign are easy to miss and you must slow immediately from 55mph. The traffic court is always full. A local wine magazine chided the city for this speedtrap.

The Carlton speed trap is well known to the locals who avoid the main road or drive very cautiously. The speed limit is 25 mph and you will get a ticket for 28 mph or over. The speed limit sign is very easy to miss. I live near Carlton and I have been a victim of this trap twice now. Every time I drive through Carlton I see the police writing tickets. The traffic court is always full. Installing speed bumps, and a larger speed limit sign would solve the problem, but the town is only interested in the money and not public safety. I now boycott all Carlton businesses.
