Strongly patrolled. Police hide in many spots, and sometimes several at a time. This is what makes Our town a fifty's style speed trap

Right before you get into the school zone. At the 20 mile per hour sign, I was "clocked" going 32. I had just been thinking how I was "chugging along" slowly, and I am certain I wasn't going 32 in the 20. I had checked my speedometer and was right about 27 and slowing before I saw the police officer. 5 minutes later, same place, he was pulling a lady over. When I drove through 15 minutes later, yet another. Fine: over $200. I'm still in shock, but then Corvallis has a BAD reputation, and the relationship with law enforcement is poor.

Motorcycle officers were hiding behind a parked car on a dry, sunny afternoon in July 2003. I was on a small motorcycle, accelerating after turning left onto Satinwood from the stop sign at Elk after a doctors appt. That part of the street goes downhill. The officer volunteered that they were there because of homeowner complaints of speeders. "I would have let you off with a warning," he told me, "if only you hadn't shifted into 3rd!" According to the manual, my 250cc motorcycle can shift into third at 15 mph. I might have been speeding, but I am not sure because I was only in third (of 6 gears), had just turned the corner, and usually feel unsafe looking at gauges right away (accelerate to what feels reasonable, check gauges, adjust if indicated.) Here are my questions: 1) If so many people drive faster than 25 there, then shouldn't the speed study (required to use radar, I am told) have indicated a higher limit than 25? 2) How can I get my hands on the speed study? 3) For radar to be used, is it true that the study had to have been done using the downhill traffic on a dry afternoon? 4) Is there reason to believe that radar may be less accurate for a small motorcycle with a shiny black fairing?

As you drive south on 3rd St (aka HWY 99S) leaving Corvallis towards Monroe/Junction City/Eugene, you will enter a school zone (35mph normally, 20mph from 7am-6pm or so) and an Elementary school will be on the left after a lighted intersection/crosswalk. On the right will be a Les Schwab Tire center. Municipal Police love to hang out in any of the side streets or commercial driveways in that area (mostly on the right (west)). If its during school hours, be sure you are 25mph or below! Not during school hours, you can get away with 40-42mph.

Benton County Sheriff drive around late at night shooting K band radar. They target opposing traffic and flip their radar on as they are about 100ft from you, so a radar detector is of limited value. If you are speeding, then pull a U turn (or 3 point depending on the road) and chase after you. They are on highway 20, as well as side streets where speed limits range anywhere from 25 to 55 mph.
