The speed limit drops from 70 in GA to 65 in SC. If you were doing between 75-80 in GA, you are now more than 10mph over the limit. This is a hilly area, so you can't see too far ahead. Watch out for Anderson County. This must be Anderson's main source of revenue.

Comment (3/2006): There is some confusion with the posting. First it is Oconee county not Anderson. The County law enforcement that patrols the area is from Oconee with a reciprocal agreement with Anderson City law enforcement. Either can and will pull you over for speeding. I grew up in this area and now travel it often on my way to and from Georgia and would advise everyone to be on their toes at every exit ramp within 5 miles of the state line on the South Carolina side.

Comment (6/2006): ok now its confusing. from mile marker 4 to the state line is oconee county and there is almost always 2 of them tearing a car apart on the north bound side. from exit 4 up is anderson county and they like getting you when you crest the hills and suddenly see them when its already to late

Comment (7/2005): I'm a Deputy in Anderson County, we don't do traffic enforcement!

Comment (2/2006): Yea, but Oconee Co. does...lol

Comment (4/2006): Oconee County and South Carolina State Patrol are very active here! I travel from Georgia to South Carolina frequently and the stretch of interstate from the GA/SC border to exit 19 is littered with cars pulled over by one and sometimes two Oconee County boys up until about mile marker 10; from mile marker 10 until exit 19 the state troopers are almost always active.

Comment (6/2006): Just slow down to no more than 10 mph over the speed limit, and you'll be fine. I've lived in Anderson County all my life, and we do have other sources of revenue. If you're not smart enough to slow down you will get a ticket. That two lane stretch from mile marker 1 to 19 is probably the deadliest in Upstate SC, so it would pay off to slow down anyway.

Comment (6/2006): It was my understanding that whatever the number on a speed limit sign, the law requires an engineering study to support that value. All 50 states sign on to obey that requirement when they accept federal highway funds. So what is the justification of changing the speed limit at the SC line? I was just stopped by State Patrol on I-85 and Anderson County is where I send the fine. I thought the limit was 70 and was going 78. Too bad.

Comment (7/2006): All you have to do is pay attention to the speed limit signs and you would not have anything to worry about

Anderson county and Highway patrol like sitting in the medians late at night and very early mornings. Speed limit is 45 when you get on at exit 40 from I-85. Dark enough through the area so you don't see them untill its to late.
