I'm surprised that this town was not on the registry before now. In South Carolina, it's notorious. It's on one of the main routes to and from the coast, so many beachgoers pass through it. The speed limit through most of the town is 25 MPH, which is much too slow for the conditions there. They got me heading west--that is, away from the beach--on a Sunday afternoon. Two patrol cars were working together, with one parked on the shoulder and the other giving chase. They ticketed me for 42 MPH in a 25-MPH zone. The bond was $150. I went back on the court day to see if they would reduce it if I showed up. They didn't, but they gave me the choice of paying the $150 as a fine and getting two points against my license, or having the charge changed to "careless driving" and paying $230 and no points. In that case, they wouldn't have reported the violation to the state and would have kept the whole fine for themselves. (I took the points.) A woman in court with me was from the coast and knew about the speed trap; but she was in a hurry to see a new granddaughter, so when she saw the 35 MPH sign up ahead, she started to accelerate from 25 MPH, and they caught her before she got to the 35 MPH sign. The speed limit, of course, doesn't actually change until you get to the sign.

Comment (5/2003): My wife and I were traveling to Pauley's Island on 4/13/03. We are from New York State and we were in a group of 4 cars. I was following along and we stopped at a traffic light. The next thing I know I'm pulled over for going 38MPH in a 25MPH. I didn't see the 25MPH sign, but I do remember seeing the 35MPH sign. The other 3 cars in the group had South Carolina tags on them. The fine was $100.00. I did do a bit of research....heading into town from the coast there are 2 speed limit signs posting 25MPH....however heading into Andrews from the other direction...(where we were originally coming from) there is only one 25MPH sign. Easy to miss....across from the Armory. I wrote a letter of protest but paid the fine. I also took digital pictures and sent them with my letter. Be careful.

mobile- near traffic lights to catch acceleration up to speed and leaving town to catch motorists who accelerate to highway speed before passing new speed sign (even a couple of car lengths before)

Upon entrance into the town you'll hit a caution light on Hwy 521 the posted speed limit is 35 mph then drops to 25 mph and is barely noticable. But you may or may not notice the cop sitting to your right in the corner with some parked cars by the tire shop. He also sits in the liquor store yard behind the parked 18 wheeler at night. If neither one catches you, there's another at the other end of town aiming his demon gun down this 1 mile stretch of town street. BE AWARE ! The speed limit is from 25 mph or less.
