This is a 4 lane US highway. It is mixed residential and business. The speed limit is 35 mph. It is way to low for this wide open 4 lane highway. It can safely be traveled at 50 mph with adequate sight/reaction time. It is patrolled constantly by marked and semi-marked slick top cars of the BPD. The SC Highway Patrol and Beaufort County Sheriff's Dept even cruise into Beaufort just to up their ticket counts on this road. The police will hide in parking lots just off the road as well as in a roadside park just past a blind curve. By the time you see them it is too late. I have a friend on the force and he laughs about how much money the city pockets off this road. He says it pays for all of the new cars the BPD buys each year.

Comment (11/2002): I agree with the previous comment. There are many driveways on this road, and many elderly people living in these houses. The spped limit could be raised, but there is really no need to do so. I also know sveral people who work for the Beaufort Police Dept, and several Sherrif deputies. none of which tell me that they get any more tickets on the stretch you sre talking about. If you got a ticket here, chances are you probably deserved it

Comment (7/2002): I have not noticed an inordinate amount of patrols on this stretch of road and I drive it frequently. I'm not a cop, either, but I know quite a few BPD, deputies, and troopers but have never heard anything from any of them about boosting tickets here. I agree that the speed limit could be raised to as high as 50 if and only if they take out the driveways for all the aged people who live on either side of that street. Those old folks can't see far when they do look and I'd hate to be the one "at the legal speed of 50" when one of them comes out in front of me because he/she couldn't see me coming. They're some of the worst drivers in the world and they're the reason the limit is 35.

Comment (1/2003): This road is 4 lanes but there is alot of traffic on this road at all times of the day. The police department and hospital are on this road. it is also only one of two ways to get to the beach. 35 mph is a very safe speed!

Taking I-95 from Savannah, Ga North towards Charleston, SC. you get off I-95 and take Hwy 17 from there to Charleston, SC. Near Beaufort I-17 is a 4 lane highway with a grassy median in the middle. I was doing work in Charleston and left at 11pm and was in route to middle Georgia to be at a meeting at 9am the next day. I was driving 70mph on hwy 17 near Beaufort ~ 1:ooam(a 4 lane road). I was pulled over by a Beaufort, SC cop. The speed limit is 55mph. There are long spances where there is no sign of speed limit, also I can not imagine having a 4 lane road with a 55 mph limit.

Ribaut Rd runs from Beaufort County court house through Port Royal all the way to Parris Island and Police in both cities strictly enforce speed limits on all the roads. Watch your speed from Hwy 21 & Parris Island Gateway that becomes Ribaut Rd and on Highway 170 going to Hilton Head. Beaufort County Sheriff, Highway Patrol and Police use unmarked cars and SUV's so beware.
