I want to give everyone fair warning, Do Not Drive Through Bluffton. If you must, drive way under the speed limit. When you see the "Reduced Speed Ahead" sign, slow down before you pass it. A cop will be waiting within inches from the other side. Not only do they sit where the limit changes from 60 to 25, but to make it worse, they write you a $250 ticket for going 3 mph over. If they pull you over, expect no mercy. I heard they once wrote a fire truck going to a fire a ticket because they didn't think the fire was big enough to justify the fire truck going 5 mph over the limit. Oh, one more thing, Do not waste your time fighting the ticket. Court is held in what looks like someones garage, and there is a big sign on the wall. It reads "Every traffic case is your word against the prosecuting officers. The court will always believe the officer."

Comment (5/2002): You might as well just hand over your wallet if they pull you over. They have no mercy.

Comment (5/2002): I do not believe they ever stopped a fire truck and they are relativly fair

Comment (5/2002): Bluffton has now annexed 47 miles of property. Most of SC 46 and SC 170 (near the Jasper County border). They make all of their money from the drivers leaving Savannah, Ga. One officers' comments after giving you a ticket, so I heard, is: "Nothing personal. Strictly business". Jeez Thanks...

Comment (7/2002): The speed limit on most streets is 30 MPH. They do not reduce it from 60 to 25. You cannot drive 60 anywhere near the are. It decreases from 55 to 40 to 30 and it has been that for at least 20 years. They do not ticket fire trucks. I live about 10 miles from Bluffton and when I go there I drive 30. It's that simple.

Comment (7/2002): Things have changed drastically here of late. The police now post the time and locotion of speed traps

Comment (8/2002): I was surfing the net and came accross this site, so i thought i'd see if bluffton was on your list (i heard a few years ago that it was on a list somewhere)...and it was! who wrote the storys i'm reading? someone's nose is getting bigger buy the lie! (you know who you are!)they never gave a fire truck a ticket that i know about. speed limit from 60mph to 30mph? i've never seen such non-sence. I've never seen that anywhere! If you get a chance to visit bluffton,we would love to have you to visit! just obey the traffic laws as you would anywhere else!

Comment (9/2002): Definitely no mercy in this county. We live in Savannah and were taking my son's friend home. My husband was driving on Buckwalter Rd (cuts between 170 and 46) this is where the schools are located. This occurred on a Sunday evening as it was turning dark. The road is very long without much other than woods. I noticed a car with the parking lights on beside the school and thought that must be a (just as you turn on this road). Speed limit is 45 mph we were traveling about 50 mph. After traveling for about most of this road, I noticed a car on the opposite side suddenly pull out turn around a stop us. There is a section (about .5 miles) that the limit suddenly changes to 35 mph. Before we could slow down we were stopped. Charged with going 50 in a 35 - this means $150.00. On the way back we noticed two cars at the school with parking lights. I believe the first one radioed the second to be waiting at this sign to catch the unsuspecting out of towner on our way earlier. What a rip off! We explained we were from Savannah and were not familiar with this road and wouldn't have a chance to slow down even if we had seen the sign. Too bad for us. No mercy from this county! I quess they met their quota for that night!

Comment (9/2002): My husband was the victim of a speed trap. One officer radioed the one down the road to be waiting for an out of towner. Driving from Savannah at dusk on a long road (Buckwalter) the speed changes from 45 to 35. Even though we were from out of town as soon as we approached the sign the second we passed we were pulled over by officer on opposite side of road waiting for us to approach. We did not even see the sign or would we have had a chance to slow down. This is a long road and there is a small stretch (about .5 miles). What a trap!

Comment (9/2002): A couple of years ago I was going to Hilton Head from Savannah and made the mistake of going through Bluffton. There was a car from FL in front of me. The cop came out of nowhere and pulled us both over at the same time. He had obviously pulled two cars over many times before. You could tell he was getting a real kick out of it. Locals were riding by and grinning and waving at the cop and he was grinning and waving back. You could tell he was very proud of himself. When I got to Hilton Head and started telling the story to people, I had a few people discribe the cop and tell me they had gotten tickets from him too! I am very proud to be a southerner. This little redneck town fits all of the negative stereotypes that Yankees make about the South. This town should be an embarrasment to all true southerners. The state of SC should do something about this place, it makes an otherwise wonderful state look really bad.

Comment (1/2003): First of all, Bluffton is a beatiful little town and I have spent many summers there. I have been driving in Bluffton for over 22 years and have never gotten a speeding ticket. If drivers would just follow the posted speed limit, they would not have anything to worry about.

Comment (3/2003): If you can't follow speed limit signs in our town, simply stay out of it! We are a small town full of happy people (atleast the ones that originated here) and we shouldn't be misconstrued. Please come and visit, just don't speed:)

Comment (3/2003): I have never gotten a ticket in Bluffton. I drive between 5 and 10 miles over the speed limit, and go through Bluffton quite frequently. However, I have SC tags. Thank you, out-of-staters, for your contribution to our county budget!

Comment (6/2003): I am a Traffic Enforcement Officer that patrols the county that Bluffton is in. Rest assured, it's not the out of towners we are looking for, its the law breakers. As a matter of fact, I ticket more locals than tourists. We welcome you, but remember, drive safely.

Comment (9/2003): STAY OUT OF BLUFFTON!!!! I recently got a vacation home on a golf course near Bluffton and found out the hard way that it is a speed trap. I got a ticket in town where it drops to 30 with no warning. I dont believe it was my speed that got me pulled over it was my Georgia plates. We were following someone with SC plates going the same speed as us. I hate this town but now I am stuck with a home next to it. Anyone looking for a golf course home??

Bluffton has always had the reputation of aggressive traffic enforcement, and I hate to admit it, but it works. I do not remember the last time I saw a wreck in the town, but nearby Hilton Head is a death trap. The local newspaper recently had an article on the "New, more compassionate" Bluffton Police Dept. I have no problem with more compassion, I just wish it had started last year. In the article, a cop is pictured on a traffic stop. The caption reads, "the driver was given a warning for his speed." The cop in the picture is the same one who wrote me a $150.00 tiket last year. He gave the driver in the article a warning, but told me last year, "The only warning you will get from me is the big black and white sign stating SPEED LIMIT 30." My insurance agent sure is glad Bluffton was not compassionate last year.

Bluffton sucks. Don't do any business in Bluffton as it is a speed trap. Speed limits are not marked well and you can easily be caught with out of state tags going with the flow of traffic 46MPH in a supposed 30 MPH zone = $180. You must be very familiar with the area tro know the speed limits, and the officers are not polite.

Posted speed of 30 mph is strickly enforced. The effective area is from the Bluffton post office thru the 4-way stop sign to Piggly Wiggly where it increases to 40 mph. There is absolutely NO cushion not even 1 mph over the posted speed. I have lived here for 6 years and have seen hundreds of cars cited. This is simply a revenue tactic of the city. Even the state of South Carolina has investigated the enforcement. DO NOT speed in Bluffton.
