Typical money maker that will continue until Legislature ends kick backs to towns for tickets written. This has been going on forever!

Comment (08/2008): On Saturday 8-16-08 I decide to take the back roads from Charleston, SC to Augusta, GA. I slowed down to 35 mph just like the sign said. As I am leaving town and see the 55 mph sign, I see the cop. I thought no problem and even started to accelerate. I had no idea why he was pulling me over. He said I was doing 51 around the curve and had to go 35 mph until I was actually at the 55 mph sign. Total BS. What a scam to generate money. If Blackville was truly concerned about public safety, they would post more signs to make the speed limit clear. I will never do any business or spend money in the town of Blackville. Almost the exact same thing happened to me in Barnwell, SC in 1990.

Comment (10/2008): I had the exact same experience in Blackville two weeks ago. I no longer travel 78 to Augusta. What revenue they make on their ticket scam they are losing in business.

Comment (11/2008): Exact same thing happened to me last week. Another driver I talked to later down the road told me the same thing happened to him and the officer laughed at him! Pathetic! Hope their budget gets cut! I\'ll never go through there again.

Comment (08/2009): I was stopped in Blackville, SC in June, 2009. The policeman said I was doing 53 in a 35 zone. I wasn\'t. I know it\'s a speed trap, and I slowed down. The car ahead of me was speeding. I think the officer used 1 radar reading to catch 2 cars. He reduced my speed on the ticket to 44 mph so I wouldn\'t have to come to court (I\'m from out-of-state). It cost me $82. I\'m never going to back to Blackville, SC again.

On the Augusta side of town, they will sit and trap people within 100 feet of the speed limit change sign. Officer stated speed I was driving, then the ticket said something higher. The fine for 54 in a 35 is $150. My advice is to avoid all towns on Hwy 78 as they are all in on revenue through speed traps, etc. The businesses in the small towns want more people to pass through, but then the local police are so aggressive I'll never return. If you are travelling to Charleston, just take I20 to Columbia and then I26 to Charleston. It is 60 miles farther, but at 70mph,it will work out the same timewise and be $150 cheaper.

Entering the city from the west side, on highway 78, the speed drops from 55 to 35 and the police sit right behind the speed limit sign.

City of Blackville, SC Speed suddenly drops from 55 to 35 and they'll be waiting on the corner by first stoplight usually, or behind the bushes around a curve
